Warming Fire

Recommended Posts

Food for thought, but when I missed a very large whitetail last week at 20 yards (I estimate a 7.5 year old based on years of photos, i.e. mature), there was smoke from a forrest fire 60 miles away filling the air - so much so that it inhibited visibility beyond 100 yards. None of the dozen or so deer that I saw that evening gave the smoke a second thought.

Bottom line is that deer in general are tolerant of smells that are natural to them, or that they have not associated with danger. Mature bucks are deer on steriods - they've lived longer and harder, learning more lessons - and they don't deviate from what they know it takes to survive unless they need to eat or breed.

I think no scent is the best scent.

A winner. Sorry I made a run north to grouse hunt today grin

And to add to your statment. "But mature bucks are cagey, the first whiff of human and they are gone. I have seen it many times, unfortunately."

And any thing that they have associated with human contact.

my mother used to build a smallfire when she got cold. she usually shot her deer while getting warm from that fire too. fire happens in nature and i think deer are inquisitive to that smell. now smoking cigs is a different smell, but i have shot many deer while smoking. i will let you know how this year goes as i have quit smoking for 11 months now and will see if i see a difference.
