Lumina security light

Recommended Posts

I think this one is old enough it still has the lock cylinder with the two white wires for the security system. You should be ale to find the connector under the dash. Unplug it, put a key in the ignition, and check continuity. Monitor continuity as you rotate the key slowly to the start position. If it drops out either the resistor pallet is worn or the ignition switch is worn out. If it doesn't and you have tilt wheel move the steering wheel up and down a couple of times to see if loose continuity. If it does than one of the two white wires has or is just about broken.

Eventually the light will not go out and the car will not start.

Thats pretty much what it is Eric. If you have a spare key for it try that, (they can go bad) but more than likely the wires in the column are cracked and breaking from flexing with the tilt, or the cylinder is worn and not getting a good read on the chip.

If it is, and you want to avoid the installation of a new one, you can test your key resistance value then solder in a resistor of that same value, plug it into the harness and tie it up under the dash to fool the security system.

But it WILL quit starting at some point if you dont do something.

Thanks for the info guys.

Stupid question......How does one test key resistance??? I test resistance on circuts on a regular basis but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around key resistance.

Thanks again guys. I'll be installing a jumper as this is just a back and forth to work car. Don't want to put too much $$ into it.

OK, measured resistance. Got 9700 ohms. I looked on the interweb and saw my key should be 9530 ohms.

Went and got some resistors, soldered them together, and ended up with 9510 ohms. With the 2% fudge factor I'm thinking I'm good to go.

Tomorrow during arts and crafts (lunch time at work) I'll pull the harness and solder these bad boys in.

I'm assuming the security light should go off............correct?

Did you also check your spare key?

As I said earlier, I have seen them go bad to the point of not working, so simply getting a "good" key could possibly solve the issue too.

Once its all hunky-dorie the light should go off for good.

You will unplug the vehicle side from the tumbler side, it's usually under the dash. You then install the resisters in series on the vehicle side of the harness.

If you look at the picture of what I did I uses the connector from tumbler side of the harness to make my bypass resistor. Then I plugged it into the vehicle side.

Mac, yes I checked the spare key. Same results.

Installed the bypass yesterday and so far so good.

Side note- I'm not a real super big fan of bypassing stuff but this is a high milage, back and forth to work car. Nothing fancy, I just want it to stay alive a while longer without putting too much money into it. Also, it's mine and I'm not doing this for someone else.

You are not really compromising anything much other than the ability of someone to steal it.

A thief would have to know that its been bypassed and would still have to break the column to steal it.

So, where is it going to be parked and what color is it???? wink

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
