Background check/gun purchase

Why sometimes when I buy a new gun I walk out of the store with it. Then there are other time like yesterday when the background check is on hold or slow and I have to wait a few days before I can pick up my gun? I asked the salesperson and he said they are never given a reason why. Why the cloak of secrecy? I gave them all of my personal information agreeing to allow my background (even give them the SSN though it is optional)to be an open book and nobody can offer me any explaination. Believe me I can wait but why can't they just provide an explaination, feels a little like they are saying 'We don't need to give you an explanation and you will get your gun when we say'. I don't have a criminal record. Anyone else have this happen and anyone know why it happens sometimes and not others?

I have a carry permit, which is also a permit to purchase, and I sometimes get the 3 day wait as well. Just part of the deal, I figure. I never needed a gun the day I was shopping for one, so it never really mattered to me.

4wanderingeyes, thanks for the response. I can wait but I am a bit of a child in some ways as I want to leave the store with my new toy. It is kind of like when I was a kid and I'd get new tennis shoes, I never wore the old one's and had the new shoes on when I left the store.

goblueM, hilarious. It's all Homer's fault! Thanks I was in need of finding someone to blame. I will pick up my other gun purchase today which is a Mossberg 12 ga. model 500 pump with a nice Nikon scope and fully rifled slug barrel. I had to wait 3 days for that too. At least I have one new gun to test drive this weekend. Would have been nice to have the 22 rifle available as I wanted to get my boys out for some of their first real shooting. Oh well next weekend. Thanks for the laugh.

I worked for the big "C" for a couple of years. Normally when there was a delay it was because of guys that had a real common last name, so they had to do more investigation on it. If you had an odd last name, it seemed like it went right through. If you were Anderson or Peterson or Johnson...then there was a wait.

One option, if you regularly are delayed, is to get a unique personal identification number. That will take care of getting delayed. I've had a few customers go this route and it is the best option.

I have also heard the common name theory, but, no reason is ever given and nobody seems to know the "REAL" reason as to why anyone is delayed. Just don't get [PoorWordUsage] and take it out on the guy who called in the nics check. It's not their fault. At most, you'll have to wait 7 days.

PITA when you aren't near home and have to drive all the way back to pick it up. Or basically pass on the purchase if its too far away.

I have a very unique name, very, very, unique. There is no one else in this country with my name and I'm pretty sure not even in the world (I've spent some time looking).

Who knows why they delay it. It is the government. Who knows why they do half the stuff they do.

Now, if we want to get nitty gritty. They dont count the day you apply, and you cant pick up on the 3rd day. So... I guess we could call that 5 days. But, the words from the FBI is "three/third".

I dont think there is any ryme or reason either. I have bought a few guns recently, and I got the first one, no wait, the second one I had to wait 3 days, then the last one I bought, another 3 days.

What I think is dumb is, I have a carry/purchase permit, but it is only good for hand guns, or assualt weapons. If I wanted a pistol, or a .308 DPS, I could walk right in, show them my card, they make a quick call, good to go. But god forbid, if I want to buy an over under shotgun, I need to wait 3 days.

There is some truth to that but, if it were ever to come to a gun grab, more than likely someone's name is associated and the answer "Uhhh...I don't know where that one went..." probably isn't going to work.

It's strange that they mention 3 days in the paperwork but when I call it in and it's delayed they give me a date I can release the gun and it's ALWAYS 5 days. Every single time. I guess they play by there own rules.

Lol. It's not 3 days though. I'm speaking from experience here. I do these checks every day.

It's a pain for the customer. My advice would be to apply for a UPIN.
