Trouble with Hummingbird

It works great. Turns on fine and works. Thhe issue? If I hit a wave too hard or bump it, it turns off? Before I decide to replace it or send the unit back to humminbird for repairs, anyone else have any ideas

I ran into that with my 898cSI too, yesterday. I fished in a tournament, and had some choppy water heading back to the weigh-in. Every time I hit a big wave, the unit would turn off - other than that it worked fine. I'm curious why that's happening.

I ad the same problem with my garmin. It turned out to be the connection to the power under the dash. Another fine installation job from nisswa marine.

But even if I tap the fishfinder, it goes off. It comes right back on when I press the on button.

I'm an silly-me when it comes to wiring.

Its not the unit. I went through this with my H-Bird. All you have to do is connect the power directly to your battery. Just use the appropriate size ring terminal. You will not have this problem again.

It could be any number of things, including the unit.... but that is highly doubtful.. Start off with pinching the round male prongs together or apart where the plug enters the unit.. These can become loose with use... Remember, I said "slightly"

Also check your inline fuse. If its a tubular, glass fuse, then make sure it is staying connected. Stretch the spring out that holds the contacts on the fuse.. If its a spade type (or glass), then make sure that the connections on either side of the fuse holder are tight and not corroded.

If you are not hardwired direct to the battery, then do it, or have it done..

Nope. I've had my Bird connected directly to the battery from day one and still have this issue.

Tweak the pins like Reddog suggested. Worked for me last year. I also ran new wires for all 4 birds directly to the crank battery.

This happened to my 898ci this spring right before a tournament. My partner discovered that it would shut down when he moved the back plug up even though the lock screws were tight. I took a tie strap around plug to the mounting base and pulled tight enough to apply slight pressure. Never shut down again. Until I read this post I had forgotten that it is still held by the tie strap but has not failed since.

My Hbird does this as well at times, but i know it if from a worn out power cord. I'll try a slight bend like i would do with an extension cord prongs and see if that helps.

Lucky me, 2 birds and not an issue in the past 3 years on either unit. Both are fused and hardwired.

I am going with the prongs on the power cord. Hbird units are pretty bulletproof.
