I was fishing on Lobster here yesterday 9-10-04 at about 8 am. working a mid lake cabbage bed and I saw this muskie high 40's possibly low 50's swiming around with his entire head out the the water. I watched the fish for about 10-15 minutes and even got a few pictures of it. It would come up stick it's head out look around for a few seconds then go back down, come up look around and go back down. Like I said I watched him do this for 10-15 minutes and he even surfaced right next to my boat and never got spooked just kept lookin around. It was doing this in about 4-5 foot of water right over the cabbage bed and didn't go to any deeper water. Has anyone else ever seen this? I talked to my boss and he saw a big pike in Canada doing the same thing. Does anyone know why a fish that size would be doing other than the fact that it can. It was one of the coolest and weirdest things I've ever seen on the water.

I saw a musky doing the same thing on a lake this year, I caught that one.

I have read on this site that they sun themselves to speed up thier metabolism. I dont know though, the one I caught that was doing it was on a windy, overcast day.

Speeding up his metabolisum would probably be a good explanation because there was a frontal system that was going to be moving through the area in a couple hours. So maybe he was wanting to get hungary again to feed before the system moved through. I don't know it sounds good.

I found the directions I gave to someone else with posting pic problems. Hope it helps.

"first I scan all the pictures I want to post and save them on my computer in a place I can easily find them (ex. my computer). Then set up your account from shutterfly.com.

It is actually quite simple to use. Just set up a new account and it will tell you step by step how to make an album of all your pictures. It will ask where you want to get the pictures from. Then go to where you saved them and bring them up. It sounds harder than it is. Like I said it will tell you step by step how to do it.

Then the tricky part, I had problems with this the first time I posted a pic. Go the the forum you want to post in. Type what you want then the address of the pic and then again with the backslash. The problem I was having was, where do I find the address for the pic. I found if you double cLick on the small pic from the album it will make it larger. Then right click on the pic, and go to properties. This will bring up a window. Find the address in this window and highlight it and copy. Go back to the forum and paste the address in between the img's that you made. BINGO it should work! It sounds like a lot, but read through it slow, step by step. Good Luck!"

I have seen many pike doing the same thing you are talking about. I believe the fish I seen had just ate and came in shallow to digest with the help of the sun. Cause one thing is for sure, you cant catch em. But I did talk to a fisheries biologist about this nature and he thought the same.

Would love to see them pictures.

Talked to a guide up on Chippewa Flowage about this. I've seen it too up there, except at night so I'm not sure about the sunning and metabolism thing. He said the ones he's seen had tails just sticking out of the muskie's throat and he thought the muskie was trying to finish the job of swallowing its meal....

I think it looks like there is something in its mouth...especially on the last pic...maybe he broke someones line and has a lure in his mouth? that might explain what it is doing...who knows. i might get scared if i saw that.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
