Legal Bear Bait?

Recommended Posts

Maybe a stupid question, but can you use fish guts for bear bait? If you can is it a good thing to add in or not?

I just thought about this, when I was thinking of some of the fish guts I dump that I could be freezing.

legal yes, good idea no, brings in undesirable, hornets an flying nastys, wolves, yotes, skunks, coons, ravens, crows, ( bugs bunny reciting tazmanian devil food list)lol. the place stinks an bear wont eat it any way, they prefer fresh food. Keep it fresh. Some guys open sites with it then switch to the goodies an staple foods. I wont touch the stuff.

We will use them to open a site. Like to put some in burlap, then put in a 5 gal pail and cover, then let it sit in the sun for a couple of weeks. Gets good and stinky. When we open a site we will find a tree 30-40 yards away from the site and throw them as high in the tree as you can. We just use it as a way to get a strong smell in the air and the smell is far enough away that we don't have to smell it but it will pull some bears into the area and then they find the bait. That is the theory.

We did it one year, that's all it took to decide that was enough. we did lie jerkbait did, put the guts in a 5 gal. pail half full of water, let it sit for the summer with a lid on it. Took it out to the bait site and hung it in a tree, shot holes in it with a 22, and ran. Came back a week later and the brush and grass under the pail was dead. sick

Rodd, hang a sak of pasteries that have been soaking in fryer grease doped up with carmel extream or reen death. hang it so a bear cant get it, get burlap sak, works better an is biodegrable, re soak it each time you visit ur site. this will work. I even go as far as re soaking even long after bear are hitting, just to keep fresh scent going, I might overkill with it cause even I cn smell my site from about 100 yards if the wind is in myface.

its a really great idea. i would recommend freezing them like you said, maybe adding a little liquid smoke and putting them "around" your bait! We use guts as "stink bait" it helps get that aroma of something new up into the wind currents, attracts ravens, and gets the bears attention!
