bassNspear
So i am going to see my canvas craft that i have had for a few years, and build a new house. Wanted to see what you guys have done as far as the size of the house ans so on. I want to be able to sit 2 people comfortable, yet, want to be able to move it around myself, either on skids, or off a sled trailer ect. Lets here what you all have done
Archerysniper
The one that I really liked was a 5*8 with a door on each end and you sit faceing with a center hole.
jasonmichalski
The one that I really liked was a 5*8 with a door on each end and you sit faceing with a center hole. I have heard that set-up work great, but 4x8 is cheaper, lighter, will fit in most trailers ,and truck beds. I have a step side and its just over 4' wide. At most big box home stores 8' length are cheap because that is the common size and it gets you in the store, they sell cheaper in some cases then you can mill them, but I always think price and function, and less cutting and almost no waste, just my
MJ1657
My perm is 6'x8' with a 36"x48" hole in one end. It's insulated, carpeted, and has shelves and built in reels for my decoys. It has a rubber roof, treated floor, T111 exterior plywood siding. I built it to last with quality materials and i'm sure it will for many years. I store it in my pole shed during the off season which will make that happen. It's very comfortable but its heavy. Not a problem except for a winter like last when your'e constantly jacking it up and moving it because of bad ice conditions. I should say my friends from HSO had to do it for me because I traveled all winter. If I had to do it over again I would do like Archery said and make it a center hole with a door in each end. We built the Dealers a 4'x8' house like that. The only issue we ran into with that house is there isn't a great place to put the heater with two people in it. MJ1657
I think the greatest thing out there for building houses is rubber roofing. Extremely easy to install and should last the life of a house. Only drawback is its a little expensive.
bassNspear
keep the ideas coming boys! Im not sure i want to do the center hole or not.
jasonmichalski
Flip up benches with the heater under them mounted on the door, might help the heater issue in a 4x8 set-up.
Spike76
It all comes down to how much you want to spend. I think a 5x7 is a good size for two people. I spear mostly out of a 4x6. Two in this house is crowded. This house is 77 inches tall, and I can move it around as needed. I also have one that is 4x5 and 73 inches tall. I use this one some but it is too small. I cut two spears down about 8 inches, and that made them feel to light. I have an older 5x7 that works best for two people. It is harder for one man to move around, but it is manageable. Use treated 2x4 on floor frame, with plywood flooring. I like three quarter plywood, but one half is lighter. Screw and caulk plywood to the frame. I've also made a double spear hole house for my daughter, about 23 years ago. It was a 6x10 with a 2x4 hole at each end, and the door in the middle. Her and her cousins had lots of fun in it, and so did I. I've also got a 15 foot wheel house, 6x8 house on skids for angling, that I've built. When ever I mention building another house, they think I'm crazy. I've got a portable spear house also, but with any wind, I don't care for it. The ideal spear house might not be made yet! With this attitude, I'll probably keep trying to make my perfect house. Sorry, I just got carried away. Good luck with your new house. MJ1657
I had $980 into my house. I had enough roofing left over to do a couple more products.
MJ1657
I like to use 2x2's for framing the floor. It gives you a better viewing angle when the floor is close to the ice.

Sunnie
IF YOU PUT THE HOLE ON 1 END LEAVE A SMALL FLOOR LEDGE SO YOU CAN STRADDLE THE HOLE WHILE SAWING OR CHISELING DURING THE YEAR.
BOUNCED
Check out the Michigan Darkhouse site Mike Holmes has plans for a house I'm going to build this summer. I like the design but instead of the tubular steel runners I'm going to run (2)2x12's on the side wall extending out to use as runners. http://www.midarkhouse.org/articles/BUILDING_A_WOOD_6X6_DARKHOUSE.pdf
