Currency?

Recommended Posts

its never recommend using US currency in any country...your much better going to the bank and bring canadian currency with you. If your going to use your credit card, make sure you tell your carrier that your going out of the country, so they won't shut it down due to unusual activity. Have fun!!

It is always good to have some cash. Many places won't take a credit card. I would get your license on line if you don't have it already. If I see a need for more than $100 cash, I will exchnage at a bank. Most retailers in Canada smack you with a pretty hard exchange of their own.

I know the Lodge we go to by Vermillion Bay wants payment in US funds. Have seen other one's quote that also.Never had a problem using US currency in the 40 years going up there. Most give you the right exchange once and awhile you may have to remind some

Take a credit card, for sure, but also carry cash as some rural places don't take cards. You'll take less of a hit in the exchange with most credit cards (even though the two currencies are basically at/near par right now, many businesses will only give you .90 on each dollar or so).

Each year after my trip to Savant Lake, I toss whatever Canadian currency I have left into a cookie jar to seed the fund for next year smile

I make 20 trips per year and ALWAYS use a credit card for EVERYTHING. If you are trading currency you are losing BOTH WAYS! You get charged to transfer US to Canada and vice verse. Credit card always gives you the precise exchange on that day, can't get any more fair. Ask your credit card company to waive any foreign transaction fees for Canada. bring some US cash for mom and pop bait shops or whatever that don't use credit cards. Buy your license online and use your credit card.

Fact is, you'll never have to see loonies or toonies or whatever ever again! Works great for me!

(For actual resorts, depends on who owns them. US owners always want US funds. They always say on their HSOforum or brochure.)

Nuff said.

100% correct!

Retailers will make sure to cover their costs of currency exchange so when you use $USD they will charge an extra fee. Your credit card will also do the same in many cases. For example, my bank card charges an additional 4%. When we go I am usually able to buy $CAD from my local bank here in Alexandria. They usually have a little on hand. Enough for my needs anyway.

Another thing we did this year that proved rather simple and convenient was we all purchased our fishing license online before we went so we wouldn't have to deal with that after we crossed. Something to consider if you're going up there to do some fishing. It takes only a few minutes and you print out your "e-license" on your own printer instantly.
