Do the nerves along the fishes spine or back still trigger a reaction as you fillet down their spine when they are knocked out? Curious as I've only filled them right out of the bucket without smacking or knifing them.

Yeah, I'm sure they do.

another topic:

We should really distinguish between brain dead and 100% dead.

I contend that brain-dead is the way to go. Full death could take more than a day.

I just don't want the fish to suffer excruciating pain. That's just me. I don't want to be the one to do it. If it doesn't bother someone to cut a live fish, that doesn't bother me either.

i like all this discussion about cleaning, i think a key question here is: do fish detect injury(obvious yes) but do they "feel pain" that is a little more complex because it can be argued that pain is the response we give to the injury detected. Ive read different "studies" that contradict one another completely on this subject. With that said ive filleted fish both dead and alive, when i was young my cousin and i would have contest when we would catch fish to see if we could fillet it and let it go if it would swim away(and they seemed to try like nothing was wrong)

As this bleeding goes, why on freshwater fish? i know in NC when we would catch little sand/nurse sharks you cut their tails and bleed them or they taste kind of bitter but whats the point in freshwater?

While we are discussing fish and humane treatment. Several people have mentioned make a fast clean kill of the fish when it is to be harvested. That being said, how do we reconcile sticking a live minnow on a hook, dropping them into the water only to die slowly?

Once when I had a little too much of Dr. McG' I actually spoke with a fish I caught. After a few snipits about family and such I brought up the touchy subject of death and dying. I asked what method he preferred to take him on the path to the great lake in the sky. I asked if he would prefer a knock on the head, a broken spine, a cut throat or just allowed to lie there and gently fall asleep. "Wow", he replied, "first you send my favorite food down there and when I decide to have snack you jerk so hard that you nearly pulled my lips off. Then, while I was being brought to the surface my stomach started coming out through my throat. Then I was lifted out of the water, where, incidently I can't breath, and held up in the air so a bunch of you humans could high five and snap a few pictures. And, now you feel sort of bad and wonder how I would like to die". I told him that pretty much summed it up, so what was your choice. I explained it was an important discussion on a HSOforum and I would really appreciate his input.

He looked at me and asked if I was drunk, stupid or both. I told him I was pretty much both. He said, "you realize you are talking to a fish, right?" "Right", I said, "but I really need to know". He motioned for me to come closer because he was running out of air. I put my ear right next to his mouth and he said, "You know you are an imbecile and I'm a talking fish, so who cares, dead is dead." With that, he took one more flop and silently passed away. I have now taken up golf.

Well, anything we do pales in comparison to this:

For those of you who may have youtube blocked at work, it is a video of a live fish that has been cooked from the gills to the tail, yest is still gasping for water. People are picking meat of of it and eating it as is still moving.

No thanks.

(at least it is a carp :-) j/k)

When I get home after a fishing trip, I just set the cooler of fish in front of a TV in my garage. Then I put in a DVD of Super Bowl XLV (the one the Packers backed into). After a few minutes, I just hand them a knife and they take care of the rest.
