Sounds like a great bird.

Scouted again this morning, the tom i've been watching/hearing wasn't roosted where he has been the past few mornings, he was about 2/3 mile south but when I was walking across the field right I thought I heard one to the further west so I'm thinking that was either a jake or subordinate tom. I ended up heading south towards the one gobbling the most which I think is the dominate tom in the area and got a general idea of where he was roosted. Hoping to put him to bed tonight if the rain is done by then and sunday then put him in his death bed monday morning.

Well I heard where he was roosted last night but still waiting for a phone call about parking in their yard so I don't have to cross the river to get to the south half of the property so I set up on the southside of the north half probably 2-300 yards from his roost where I seen a hen saturday morning.

This morning got in the blind and didn't hear him gobble til about 15 minutes after shooting time. He gobbled once or twice more after he left the roost and I knew right where he was but not on the right property, but close. Had to leave quick at 7am to take the dog to the vet but came back out right away. He would gobble about every half hour not moving far then finally at about 945 he finally started gobbling more often, I called most of the morning about every half hour or so hoping he would eventually sneak in to find me.

Finally around 10 the gobbles started getting closer then silent for 10 minutes then one real close. I peek out the back window and hes coming along the field edge at about 35 yards. I get the bow ready and wait, and wait. He started strutting in at about 20 yards heading right for the decoys and I waited some more, still hearing him spitting and drumming real close. By now I can't see him out of the window to my side, now hes silent, pretty soon he walks at a fairly fast pace at 4 yards, yes 4 yards, between me and the dekes. Before I can get drawn back hes out of my shooting window and now on the otherside of the blind.

He ends up walking around my blind and struts around gobbling at 15-20 yards for a half hour. While I was watching him through a tiny peep hole, he started heading down the hill barely in sight and starts breeding a hen that snuck in. Pretty soon she walks out in front at 30 yards and off to the north. He hung around another 10 minutes or so and started making his way back to where he came from.

Pretty bummed that I didn't get a shot but talk about an adrenline rush, and a pretty good start for day 1 but now I'm stuck at work all night but back at it in the AM

Well the pics are in the contest submission thread but heres the story:

Yesterday morning I was planning on waking up at 4, but wouldn't ya know it, I wake up and its 8:30 something (I guess thats what happens when you work til 11:30pm and don't get to sleep til 12:15). I figured I might as well still go out since I still don't have to work until 2. I throw on my clothes, grab my bow and run out the door. Get to my spot, no idea where they roosted the night before, I tried a locator call on the north side of the property, nothing. I continue across the field to the south end where my blind was set up.

It's 9:30 by the time I get all set up. Threw a lone hen decoy on the field edge. Started calling about every half hour-20 minutes, waiting and listening. Finally a little after 1015 I thought I heard a gobble but sounded like it was to the northwest, across the river. About every 5 minutes i'd hear him gobble so I started calling a little more often and a little more aggressive. Finally around 1045 I thought I'd try to get a more precise location of where the gobbles were coming from and maybe if I could get a good location on him, move towards him closer and set up.

I get down on all 4s in the blind, open up about 1/3 of the door and stick my head out. I'm concentrating hard down at the ground, listening very closely and pretty soon I hear a gobble close. I look up and there he is 125 yards away coming along the field edge. I slowly get back in the blind and get the bow ready and give him a few calls and wait. 5 minutes later he was by and goes right to the decoy, stops quartering away at 20 yards and I let my arrow fly. He drops down after the hit then actually gets air borne because I was set up on a little hill. He didn't fly long and started hobbling through the oak saplings, I take off after him, catch up to him to finish him off quickly.

The end.

Sorry guys!!!! They caught me reaching this year had a flock of ten jakes and toms come in from behind silent in the woods. I was in my blind but they were so close they must have heard me reaching for my gun. Took a crack at one running away by himself and he didn't fall. This occurred Monday am and only heard one gobble the rest of the season with no other birds seen. Good luck to everyone that has a hunt coming up. I think it is going to be a bumper harvest.
