New used rods... Ok deal?

Sir_Sumo

Question

Picked up a couple used st croix avids and 1 eyecon earlier for $200. Sounds like a good deal and so I bought it. Poles are near perfect but noticed after looking at serial numbers, the avids are 5-6 yrs old. Eyecon is 1 yr old. Did I get a good deal still? Jw. Are there any significant differences with the age of these ones vs the newer ones technology-wise in blanks, etc wise? To be specific they are '06 and '07 rods. Only negative is rods also have original owners name customized on it. Doesn't bother me though.

The only downfall might be the lifetime warranty and if your seller has registered the rods in his name. The rods themselves are very good and still a top notch option. I bought a Avid with a Shimano Stradic off EB and I registered in my name with no problem. The wife had a problem with it (broken tip)and I had no problems sending it in. St. Croix called and asked if I would like to upgrade to a nice new Legend for just $50.00 more. Sure I would laugh

I have a fleet of St. Croix Rods Avid and Legend rods that I have bought new and used. So far I've broke three of them due to my or my fishing partners carelessness. I have never registered any of my new rods and I don't know if the used ones are registered or not. Each time I have damaged a rod I've sent it in to St. Croix and they have offered to upgrade the rod or replace the one I had. I had an Avid replaced a few weeks ago. I don't think they care if it is registered or not if it is a damage replacement. The cost was $75 plus any cost for the upgrade. I upgraded the broken Avid to a new model Legend for an additional $100.

The Eyecons are a new series that came out last year so they are all the same. The Avid line was redone several years ago. If your rod has "IPC" stamped on the blank they should be the new series. If not you have the older run but still good rods.

You got a good deal either way. You got $400+ retail for an even $200.

The only thing I would be concerned about would be the name stamp. The person you bought them from probably worked at a St. Croix retailer and bought them on special through a special vendor program. I would hope they wouldnt hassle you on any warranty issues based on that fact as they are only suppose to be used by the employee. But you may never even need to cross that bridge...

I have had many st croixs and shimanos and have never registered them. Instead of dealing with the companies on your own for a warranty claim you

can bring them to Joe's sporting goods. For $20 they send in the rods for you and call you when the new one arrives. Never paid any increased st croix warranty cost, never had a receipt, and didn't even buy the rods at Joe's. I have been doing this for the past few years, hopefully nothing changes.
