Lowarnce H20 vs Navionics App for Iphone

I have the Lowarance H20 handheld GPS with the Minnesota chip that I use for ice fishing but I also have an Iphone. I was wondering if the Navionics App was comparable to The H20 because I would really like to sell the Lowarnace if my Iphone can do the same thing. Is one better than the other?

I have an H2Oc and a droid but prefer the H2O, mainly because the battery drains so quickly if using my phone as GPS plus i like the buttons vs the touch screen so the H2O is easier to navigate with IMO. I will upgrade the H2Oc at some point but will always use a separate GPS unit other than my phone. Plus; I am quite mobile and like to tuck my phone away when fishing, the handheld GPS units are much more durable IMO.

The phone will get the job done, but I prefer the h20. Mainly for its durability. I don't trust having my phone out while drilling holes,or out in the rain. its kind of like having a phone with a camera. Yes I can take a picture with my phone, but if I want a really good picture I'm going to use a camera. I think you need service in order for the phone app to work,so depending on where you fish, could be an issue.

You can download the maps, preferably through wifi (they can get big) and then you are golden.

I have a garmin handheld and an iphone with navionics. I run the iphone from the couch to get a good idea of what i'm doing, but it's the garmin when i'm on the lake. for exactly the reasons described above: ruggedness, waterproof, battery life, etc.

one advantage is that your iphone will probably still work in a year, whereas the H2O will probably take a dump on you in 3...2...1... grin

This is great information everyone! I just didnt want to have both if I could sell the H20. As fas as durability goes, I work for a large electronic retailer that sells a very rugged and durable underwater case for the Iphone. Waterproof and vurtualy damage proof. If I didnt have the H20 already I would just invest in the smart phone app and get the waterproof case for when I am on the ice. You would save a couple hundred by doing this.

I researched the "lifeproof" cases. $85 seems a bit pricey for a case

That only has a life-span of 50 times off and on.

Also, it doesn't float like my H20 ( when using lithium batteries).

I think pinpoint accuracy is overrated. Get me close and my auger and jig will do the rest of the work. If you have a phone already, I think the app is a no brainer. There are WAY too many advantages of the app like satellite images, occasional updates, community layer for sharing spots, and more.

that's an advantage??? wasn't it you that posted a big warning about it???

Personally, i think the only real advantages are:

1. you already have the phone

2. it's only 10 freakin' bucks!

Of course its an advantage. Especially since it's an option. I have already came across many instances where I temporarily marked a spot for a buddy, FROM MY COUCH then deleted it after he got there.

Actually the more I think about it, it's a HUGE advantage.

I'd be sold if it had a 'for your eyes only' function on there, maybe something involving your contact list.

I noticed when I was on mille lacs a few weekends ago there were several spots marked shocked

Ill also say, dang it looks 10x cleaner on my phone than my old garmin.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
    • Or he could go with leech~~~~~
    • Bear can relate too. Tell Leech to start a new account named Leech5, we'll know who he is.If he has any trouble, Bear can walk him through it.
