Bullheads for Northerns???

Recommended Posts

Would they work? Live or dead? Where is the best location on the body to hook them?
I know it probably seems like all I ever do is ask questions, but being new to fishing in Minnesota, I am trying to amass as much knowledge as possible. If I knew more, I would contribute more.
Thanks for the patience,
Tennesseean

While I've never used them personally, I've heard that bull heads are a great bait for most warmwater gamefish...I've used madtoms (stonecats) when living out east (PA) and a bull head is essentially a big madtom. I'd hook them like any other bait (depending on the situation) and another nice thing...The SOB's are tough as coffin nails...I've seen them live in an inch of water in a cooler for over a week...beats suckers which die if you look at them crooked. Below the Coon Rapids Dam is a great place to catch them...If you were curious. I'm not sure about the regs with moving bait from one place to another so check it out first...

I've heard that bullhead are one of the fav foods for pike and musky because they are so "soft". I read that and couldn't believe a bullhead with leathery skin and spines could be considered soft, but I guess it would be true since they have no scales or anything. Never have tried them though.

Just last week I was out fishing and was watching a guy reel one in, and just as he was lifting it out of the water this little norther jumped about 2 ft. in the air after it. It looked like a dolphin.
