Chevy pickup starter will not stop running?

Recommended Posts

1993 chevy 4x4 Auto 4.3 engine

Went to start tonight and the started stayed engage. So I turned the key off right away and the truck stopped running but the starter was still turning the engine over. Turn the key back to on and the engine started but the starter did not disengage. Back to off and the starter stayed running. Jumped out and disconnected the battery to get it to stop.

Could it be possible the solinod is shorted or should I be looking more into something in the steering column?

Thanks

It could be the keeper, split ring, on the end of the starter shaft that stops the starter gear from going to far and causing the starter gear to jam on the flywheel, this will cause the starter to keep ingagued.

its easy enough to check and see what is going on.

With either a test light or a volt meter check for power on the small purple wire. If there is no power and the engine is cranking than the solenoid on the starter is stuck. Try tapping (key word tap) the solenoid with a hammer. If the starter stops working replace it. Its only a matter of time before it does it again.

If there is power on the small wire then you get to have the joy of figuring out where it is shorted to power.

My bet is the solenoid has welded itself to the high voltage contacks and the starter will need to ber replaced.
