Strikemaster Lazer Synthetic Hand Auger vs. Nils

Can anyone give a detailed review on the new synthetic Lazer hand auger? I am going to purchase a new 6" auger next year and can't decide between the Strikemaster or the Nils. Has anyone been able to compare the two out on the ice? I am looking for one that is lightweight and cuts fast with little effort. I know that Nils has a reputation for this, but I am curious to know if Strikemaster's new auger is now on par with the Nils.

I'd say if you are looking for light weight and fast cutting then the new Synthetic would be tops on the list for that. Not that any hand auger is heavy, but the synthetic would definitely be lighter. It has Lazer blades, so it should cut fast. I've not seen one on the ice, only watched Dave Genz use his on videos.

I gave that auger a very close look at the Ice Fishing Show in December. Looks well made and it is very light in weight. The auger section combined with an 18V cordless drill would be a great tool for the guy who likes to walk out and fish!

The new synthetic auger does cut more efficiently than its Lazer cousin... The new head design on the synthetic allows for a clean cut, with no binding at the end of the whole. So, in the long run, it is faster, as you are not binding and cutting more smoothly.

I have cut with both this auger and a hand held Nils - pretty comparable in cutting I would say. Benefits to the new synthetic auger would have to be the non-binding, the flexible flighting (makes it easy to get ice off so you do not add weight), and the ability to use a offset handle or standard handle (however you like to drill).

Thanks for the review JKH431. I thought that I had read somewhere that the new augers weren't supposed to bind anymore at the bottom of the hole. Also, it seems that with the new cutting head the blade bolts don't get in the way as much. They almost seem flush with the blade carriage. Good to hear that cutting is comparable to the Nils. I think I'm going to pick up the synthetic for next year's ice season.

I've often wondered why anyone would need 30+ inches of flighting on a hand auger if the object is to drill holes in early ice of somewhere around 6 to 12 inches thick before pulling out the power auger when the ice gets much thicker.

Less flighting on a shorter shaft would be lighter overall and more practical for early ice situations.. right?

The flighting is about the same height on all 3 of their augers, since each one can be used as a hand auger and each one can be attached to the power head.

I have the 4.5" / 6" / 8" Nils augers. It is fun to attach the 4.5" auger to the Tanaka power head. It is almost like the auger is free falling through the ice.

Because not everyone pulls out a power auger when the ice gets thick, I remember the days befrore I got my first power auger trying to drill through 3 feet of ice and wishing my auger was a bit taller! wink

Those were cool vids. I bought a 6" Nils hand auger this year with the intention of getting an adapter to put it on my Stikemaster power head. I did that but the adapter took a long time to arrive. My point here is we were drilling through almost 18" and that auger flat out rocks. I guess the reason Nils is not changing and redesigning thier products every six months is because they just work great.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
