Went from Ford to Chevy, did I screw up?

Well so far so good. Im liking it pretty good. Although watching the MPG gauge gets a little frustrating. Im gonna have to learn how to drive it for the best MPG. Ive got almost 600 miles on it now and Im averaging under 15mpg. It does go way up when it drops down to 4 cyl though. But keeping it there is my issue. I typically keep it around 10 mph over speed limit and there in lies the problem for me.

Love the growl though, Ford never did that. My trip to Texas next month pulling my 20 ft boat will be the ultamate test for MPG.

The 5.3L/6spd combo is the most fuel efficient V8 for everyday driving as of now. But, as you said, depends on how you drive it. Plus I would think it would inch up a bit after its broken in.

Don't watch the gauge or change the mode you're looking at. You're obviously set on the one that shows realtime mpg which is pointless IMO.

You also can't judge what your mpg will be until the truck reaches atleast 7500 miles. Until then, sit back and enjoy the ride.

They are not built for this kinda winter

This has to be one of the "silliest" comments I've read in awhile. I have a 97 Tacoma I've owned since 2000. It has been through alot of hard "use" in it's time with me, and has yet to give me any issues....ok one starter. I have had the same two Toyota's for 12 years now and they both run and drive great, considering they are not made for this kind of winter. crazy

mabr,

Couple thoughts on the issues with the ford... my hired guy had an 06 150 with similar issues... what was it??? The catilitic (sp?) converter was bad... replaced it with a new one, shortly after ( few months) same issue ( I will add, this guy is more meticulous with things than ANYONE i know) What did the Ford techs say there thoughts were on why this happened? They really stressed the use of using the Motorcraft oil filters... for some reason the non ford filters created some issue that created build up in the cat....

So, Not sure if that could be it, but it sure seems like the same issues he had... his ran great, until on day he decided to "clean the carbon" out of it and punched er down...

good luck with the chevy! Even though I am a ford guy!

Most truck owners I know hold there trucks a long time, regardless of brand.

I've had my 99 GMC Sierra Ext Cab 4x4 for 10 years now, bought it used with 40k. Little over 250,000 miles on it now and it still runs great and looks pretty decent. Its very nice not having a vehicle payment (and no payment for quite awhile), cheap license tabs, and cheap insurance.

Not sure when I'll get rid of it... maybe another 1-2 years? I'm not sure.

Well I just got back from Texas with the new truck pulling my 20 ft boat. Impressed is a understatement. Averaged 12.9 mpg to and from running 70-80 the majority of the way. Im sure had we been easier on the pedal we could have gotten better, but we were anxious to get both to Texas and back home. Put almost 2400 miles on this trip and it pulled WAY better than the 06 ford ever did.

Im happy with it now. Ride is great, power is great and the interior features are great. The service manager also said wait till its broken in and mileage should get better.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

Yup,

I just ordered my 5th Ford and can't wait for that EcoV6 FX Sport to show up in the driveway, if you worry about gas milage buy a bicycle. Everything mechanical will have things that you don't like....

Trucks are all about versatility and comfort, towing, hauling and looking good, if your not happy give it back to the bank.

Don't mean to sound huffy but we buy trucks for a reason regardless of the brand, we need um and want um.... and use um... Sorry just my two cents worth. Enjoy it.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
