Steve Foss
And here's another hint, if you like pickled fish. We keep the sections with the y-bones and toss them in a separate freezer bag. When it comes time to whip up a batch of pickled pike, we use the bony sections, because the bones turn to jelly through the pickling process. In fact, I do just a slightly different take on the y-bone thing. I cut the tail portion of the fillet completely off, just behind where the strip of y-bones ends. Then I cut off the strip with the y-bones. So I've got one tail fillet that looks a bit like a panfish fillet, two narrow strips of boneless fillet and a bony strip. The tail fillet and the two boneless strips I just cut into fingers, and we fry those up, using Frying Magic or Shore Lunch and oil, as finger food. Mmmmmmmm.[This message has been edited by stfcatfish (edited 10-10-2002).]
erikwells
If we pick up some pike on Saturday I will show you. I like to eat pike better than walleye.

Steve Foss
Hey erikwells:You like pike better too? I thought I was about the only one. Pike also make better chunks for chowders, because they're firm and hold together better than most other game fish.

Guest
Ahhh - good. I remember my 1st one was this past spring, up on Kab with a walleye guide. I was starting to get a little frustrated at how hard it was to feel a walleye's shy little nibble and tell it from the bottom, when that lightning went up my arm. I was counting to 10 with an open bail, just like he said to, when that line started payin' out fast and when I finally set the hook - that son-of-Poseiden SET BACK !!!! Oh it was only about 18" or so, but I was a happy man!!!! The guide looked pretty disgusted, and didn't wanna handle "that slimy G**D*** snake". I was in love.------------------<)/////><{RobertC
Steve Foss
I've quit trying to set pike-haters straight. So many make judgments about things without giving them a chance. Of course the guide may not hate pike at all. He might have figured you, like so many people, cuss at them, and was just talking like he figured most people would. This talk about pike is making me HUNGRY. On the main ice fishing forum, we've been talking jigging v tip-ups for pike, in case some of you guys have missed it. And I just posted an inquiry about who prefers live or dead bait under tip-ups and why. Join the discussion, won't you? Aside from seeing how other guys do it, there are a few here new to pikedom who can use the dialogue.
Guest
STFcatfish - I'll follow the thread over in "ice", but I most likely won't be spending much or any time hardwater fishing this year for a few reasons - -can't cast-my lovely and tolerant wife has had j u s t about enough of my frequent absences-I intend to further hone my snowboarding skills this winter up at Powder Ridge. But I'll follow the threads anyway. Thanx------------------<)/////><{RobertC
