Strikemaster Big Volt

I am looking at getting a new auger and am seriously considering a 10.25" Strikemaster Big Volt. The way I see it, I will always have a vehicle or my ATV with me to run it as I don't go out until I can at least drive my wheeler. I have a spare deep cycle to strap to the ATV and can do some charging off the ATV if needed. I might move a little during the day but I rarely hole hop, say 10-15 holes max in a day. I also plan on getting a drop down house by next winter. The Big Volt sounds good for me, right?

Why not get the electra lazer then? More versatile and does the exact same thing...plus $100 cheaper! I still think Big volt was the worst invention SM came up with since the composite handles...Great company-just don't see this one I guess

I was looking at the Electra too, but I found the Big Volt 10" for only $10 more than the 8" Electra. Plus it seemed like the Big Volt was better suited for re-drilling holes which I will be doing in the future. Why do you say it's a bad design? I did some searching and didn't really come up with any widespread negativity towards it.

I had a long debate with myself as to which one to buy. Ended up with the electra since I do not have a wheeler or sled. If I did would have chose the big volt, as carrying a battery around would not be much extra hassle, just one more piece of equipment. They are geared different and would like to have that extra snort.

I have one for my wheel house and love it, I always have my gator with me and the 15foot cables are nice being my house is only a 8x10.  it may take a little longer but I have no mess in my house as the blades do not kick up ice like my Jiffy 30 does.

Mine is only a 8" but I think i only paid 40$ at the end of last season at a rummage sale.

Well since someone bumped this I'll give my report on the Big Volt. I bought it but I sold it. I was using it on my ATV like I said but it would flash the battery light every time I used it. Even the 3000lb ATV winch wouldn't do that when I'm stuck in the mud. The summer after I used it the stator went out on the ATV, not sure if the auger had something to do with it or not. It would also kick out when there was a ton of ice, a thermal protection? For a wheel house I still think it's a good option as it doesn't kick up ice chips like a gas auger does. I now have a 9" Jiffy propane and am very happy so far with it.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
