its the "its january 15th, why cant i drive out" mentality.

with all the warm weather, my ice thickness is reduced by 4 to 6 inches right now. the lake i was on today has 11 inches so im calling it 6 to be safe. when there is 18 i will drive my truck out insted of 12 like it should be.

I was on a lake today with 8" of ice in most areas. I did find 6" also.

late morning and early aft in 42 degree temps, I watched full sized trucks pull out fish houses.

What's with some people? confusedconfused

I was concerned with using my wheeler.

Entertainment!

I work to hard for my stuff to chance dropping it through the Ice. Maybe they have good insurance for vehicles, ice house and life. Maybe his wife was encouraging him, saying it will be fine or maybe he was desperate to get away from said wife. You never know the psychology behind what you think is crazy.

If I had found 8" - 6" variance I would be concerned about 2" waiting for me and would have went out on foot. But that is the difference, every one has their opinion.

Here's a question? What part of the state do you live and fish and what mode of transportation are you currently using? I live the little falls area and have only been out 2 or 3 times in the last few weeks. I used a wheeler yesterday.

I think I'll stick to walking this year, it's good exercise and I like to fish to get rid of stress and for the peace of mind. But to each their own, every lake is different and they change day to day. Just slow down and be alert and Please be courteous of other peoples space this year if you decide to drive a heavy vehicle on the ice.

Yeah, I tend to go on the safety side first. I figure if I can walk 3500 yards on the golf course in the Summer, I should be able to walk $300 yards out to the fish house. I realize not everyone has a 4 wheeler to pull a bigger house out, but if it was me I would spend some money and buy a portable, it would be a lot cheaper then throwing your $35,000 truck in the lake.

I don't worry about the people who take heavy rigs on to iffy ice. I worry about the volunteer rescue people they put at risk when they go through....
Exactly.

Its one thing when someone wants to put themselves and their gear at risk doing something unnecessary. Its quite another when they are not only risking themselves but also those who will be trying to save them (whether that be professionals, volunteers, or just other fisherman nearby who cant in good conscience sit by and watch someone in trouble(despite what they may think of them)) or recover their gear for them.

I am sure some of these clowns would say "Hey, I aint asking nobody to risk anything for me!" but I am also sure they would be singing a different tune when they cant get out of the freezing cold water and are about to go under for good or need to get their vehicle out of the lake...

While your worrying about everybody I'll be fishing...

Tough to get out fishing when the ice is broken up at the access and its standing water...plus the safety of the people who have to save the guys not using common sense just sayin.
