broke down chevy silverado 1500

Recommended Posts

chevy 1500 silverado with 5.3 L. 190000 miles

going through the cities today heard a pop sound, got a fue blocks up and truck started to die. we got to the side of the road and the motor died. at first it would barly start and then die. we had it towed to my shop and when we got there i started it and it ran for maybe 10-15 seconds fine and then started to flutter and died.

the truck has true dual exhaust. y pipe was cut off just behind the catalytic converters and 2 new pipes ran to the back. i just hope the pop i heard wasnt to much back pressure blowing the exhaust manafold gasket out. the reason i say that is because i know i have a manafold bolt snaped off. it seams to be a common problem with these motors.

i guess my question is what kind of symptoms will plunged catalytic converters have on this truck?

any info would be appreciated.

If it where the cat it would start and idle. There would be a severe lack in power when trying to accelerate and you would likely hear exhaust gas trying to escape anywhere it could before the cat.

Have you checked fuel pressure? Spark? Intake vacuum? Unplugging the MAF sensor?

Don't know much about GM's but it could be your fuel pump, VERY common with the GM pick ups and suv's.

Did you do headers to do true dual exhaust?

Haven't heard to many owners of piped trucks with issues related to cutting off a y pipe and putting two pipes back to the tail gate instead of one.

well its fixed. fuel pressure with key on, not running was around 20 psi. when i started it it would hold 20 for 10 seconds or so then drop below 15 psi and die. replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, and in the morning will replace the pump relay.

after i replaced the fuel pump i had 0 psi. the relay must have stuck or something because i swapped it with a similar one and it worked, then put it back in its original spot and it worked. not sure its bad but i will change it just to be safe.

key on not running is like 56 psi. running is between 54 and 62 psi depending on rpms. anyone know what the specs are for fuel pressure on these trucks.

was a easier project than i had thought. got a hold of a fuel pressure tester at 1 pm had the box off by 2:30 and new pump in by 4. after some head scratching and cussing was all put back together by 8:30.

no headers, each exhaust manifold comes off to each cat and out the back. no muffler.just call it true dual because some people will put another y pipe after the muffler with 2 out the back which doesnt sound near as good or as loud. when i got the truck i thought it would be good if people could here me turn the corner from 2 miles away, now it gets annoying.

the only problem i have had with exhaust is fuel milage. i tend to stand on it more. on a trip up north i get 15 mpg. around home more like 12. i dont think thats to far off what other people get though.

and dont try lecture me on how i need a muffler. I DONT CARE. wouldnt be the first time some one told me that.

i cant believe the stock fuel pump made it to 190,000 and over 10 years!!! thats almost got to be a record for a chevy pickup. i assumed it had been replaced when i bought it with 130,000 on it but it was a dalco with 10 years of rust on the ring that holds the pump down.

thanks for the help airjer. anything else i should look at while its in the shop?

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
