Navionics

I got the original Navionics North two Decembers ago when it was only a simple map with no waypoint or trail ability at all. It was $50 at the time. They provided their last update for that app sometime this summer and it still works on my phone. I'm guessing the new one will eventually suffer the same fate due to some improvement yet to be named, however, the mapping will still work as it does at this moment or better!

Ok then im going to upgrade. Does anyone know if we will need to buy a new one every year now? I was under the understanding that pinch screen and the better stuff would continue to update on lakes north?
for what a handheld and a chip would cost, the possibility of having to fork out $10 a year is fine by me.

I've never used Navionics, only Lakemaster. Since the latter has yet to dive into the app market, what can I expect as far as similarities and differences between the two systems?
I have lakemaster chips in my HDS units and navionics on my phone. I use them both interchangeably all the time.

Obviously there are differences to the good or bad either way. One map will have a piece of structure and the other will not, but it happens both ways.

When I want to look up something quick, I use the navionics app on my phone vs. using my HDS. Its so much faster to move around with a touch screen.

Accuracy wise its a toss up, but the GPS in a phone is not quite as accurate as that of a handheld because they do not go out as many decimal places, but its marginal.

shizzy,

It's fine by me too. Never claimed it wasn't a good deal. However I think many including myself were lead to believe it was a one time purchase that would continually update. (ie last year everyone was asking when the pinch screen update was coming???)

I dont believe they have a "US NOrth" anymore do they? This is what I purchased last year. It was updated 3 times since then, but the last update hasnt happened for a while.

They probably come out with a new "map" every so often to force people to buy new ones.

Even at that, its worth it because its continually updated versus paying hundreds for a chip and its outdated the next year.

Nope, with each free update they update many of the maps as well. It was explained to me that it was such a drastic change in the interface, that they were unable to just send out an update and had to put out an entirely new app.

For those that are saying that iTunes is better than Android Market, I have used both and both work essentially the same way. Apple is quite a bit more strict in how the apps are programmed and how everything works, but the history of all your paid apps is essentially the same. The only reason people are complaining about the old app not being available is because Navionics was somehow able to delete the App from the marketplace. Google doesn't seem to know how that happened and Navionics tried to turn their back on it.

Yeah its totally worth the money. I love mine, and it is so nice to not have to buy a 200 handheld gps, then another 100 chip./

Some of the lake maps are not as accurate as lakemaster (Lake of the woods, specifically), but it is more than good enough for popping holes all winter.

Note quite. Navionics runs very smooth on my iPhone4/4S. I have buddies who have android versions of the same app and the different android counterparts feel more choppy. Mind this is on different 4G android handsets, HTC & Samsung. Each android handset may perform differently. I have yet to see an android unit that performs as good. But again just my opinion.

As far as purchase history for iPhone you can redownload if missing or deleted even if it's no longer on the market for purchase. For instance I can redownload the old north app right now from iTunes. Android market can be different for each handset which creates confusion of availability. It's also possible for the developer to pull an app and not make it avail for download.

Not quite what?!? Where did I say anything about how well the app runs? I was comparing how iTunes and Android Market work. And just for an FYI, Navionics runs perfect on my Droid2. Zero choppiness, no lag and GPS location is near perfect, or as close to perfect as I can tell. I'm just glad I'm not forced to have a phone that if it gets dropped anywhere near a hard surface the face or back shatter.

My bad I had misread thinking you were comparing the iTunes version of the Navionics App (iOS) to Android market version. I am not doubting how your Navionics run on your Droid 2. I use to work in the smart phone market and seen plenty. My buddies have the Samsung Galaxy IIs & HTC EVO 3D which im sure is as every bit as good as your Droid 2. But the development of software may be slightly different for each handset thus where you see the term "FRAGMENTATION" for different versions of Android OS. Hence I also mention this was just my opinion and that each device or handset will have different performance or outcome so calm down. This isnt a iPhone VS your Android thread. Just be glad you have a smartphone that can do Navionics.

As far as App store goes. Tell me are you Android market users able to redownload obsolete software no longer avilable for purchase through the marketplace from your purchase history? That is what I want to know...

Google says you should be able to, but something/someone happened and it was not available for awhile. Apparently it is now back to being available for some/all who purchased it from what I have heard. I do not know if it is or not since I still have it installed on my phone and my only option in the market is "uninstall"
