What do you recommend for a marine radio? Not thinking handheld.

Typically mn water, low, url, mille lacs, etc. Maybe a canada trip.

Thanks

What are the rules for Canada? It would be licensed in US. Is there reciprocity?

As others have noted spend the money on the antenna. Any $100 radio will work fine with a good antenna. A $500 radio with a crappy antenna will give you crappy reception. I think my radio is a Cobra and it works fine.

Marine radio use does not require licensing if you use the public channels. Same is true for Canada.

My handheld is the Standard Horizon HX290. I like it. Search for it on the net to review specifications.

Man, I have to get my eyes checked. I thought you said you were looking for a handheld. Good grief.

This cannot be said any clearer, the antenna is the deal, and the longer the better. If your serious about a marine radio for safety on big water, get an 8' antenna.

Shakespear 5101 centenial is a good one for about $50 but if you spend a lot of time on big waters and want great reception I would get the 5225 galaxy. I have the older version of it and its a great antena and has been very durable. $130 or so. I got mine at Marine General in Duluth a bit cheaper so call around and see who has the best price.
