Choosing a used ice auger - Need help

I'm looking to buy a used ice auger. Can you guys help me choose? What's the difference between them all? How many cc's? I heard something about blades that "pull" the auger while cutting so you don't have to push down as much.

Thanks for the help guys!

A good auger you should never have to "push". All drill holes, don't get to worried about HP or CC, my augers a 1.35 HP and in most cases outdrills even 3HP units. Ther are 2 basic blade desinges, single bladed chippers, good all around choice, easy to sharpen yourself but generaly slower drilling. Shaver blades, mostly a 2 blade system, faster but need more care to keep in good shape. Weight is also different between brands, Jiffy in general is the heaviest, up to near 40 pounds, Eskimo around 30 pounds, Strikemaster in the 23-27 pound range depending on unit, then Nils at 19-21 pounds depending on auger shaft length....All the Eskimos run a Viper motor for the last several years, Stikemaster runs a Solo now for the past 3-4 years, Jiffy has their own now in the past 3-4 years, before that most ran the same engines but are now no longer being made, Nils is the only one still using the same motor thats been around for 50 years.... All but the Nils are easily found used, not sure why since everyone brags how good their brand is yet seem to buy a new one every few years...

Here is my dilemma.....I have a wheel house, a permy that I leave on my lake all winter and a porty that I use for early ice and running around on lakes. I routinely find myself redrilling the holes in the permy all winter long. Additionally, I like to fish tip-ups near my permy. I use the wheel house and porty at a lot of different lakes and like to move around with those two. What is the one auger that will meet my needs?

Basically 8" is the way to go. Make sure it has chipper blades. From what I understand cutter blades are like a curved knife, and chippers are flat with some notches in them, right? I had the cutter blades on a 6" electric auger. Not only was the hole too small, I couldn't re-drill holes at all. I now on a 3hp strikemaster with 8" auger and chipper blades. Get a gas auger, 8" or 9", with chipper blades, and you'll be good to go.

Just make sure it runs. eek
