The F150 Infamous Whistle

Recommended Posts

Cold out and I can play a tune again. Whistle around 60 in my 02 F150 5.4

Is there a cure that a home wrench jockey can handle?

Thanks for your time.

Tom

It's OK, it's the built in Deer whistle option so you don't hit them on the highway! grin

Do you have any aftermarket antenas' on the truck? another thing you can do is have someone ride with you and try and pinpoint where its coming from maybe try taking over the window seals and listening if the sounds go away.

It is a characteristic of the engine, but you can do a couple things to help prevent it, or make it go away for a little while. Replace the IAC, replace the pcv valve. Basically in the cold air, ice freezes on the IAC and creates a ridge on the orifice in the IAC, in which is the perfect size to create a whistle. A new IAC, has a coating on it that prevents it for a while, and will quiet it, when it does come back. They had a heated pcv kit in 01 that helped eliminate the pcv whistle, but 95% of the whistles were from the IAC's so they didnt help manny vehicles.

IAC= Idle air control valve. It is behinf the throttle body on the back top of the engine. It is a valve that the computer controls to allow air into the engine, that in return changes the idle.

There is also a tsb to replace the air tube, tsb# 2-10-8
