slate vs box calls

Whats the sound difference and what do you guys prefer? I have a few slate calls but found a box call for a decent price.

there's no right answer. diff calls in diff situations. and sometimes the birds will respond to one call or another, for no apparent reason

i'd say you should get a box call in addition to slates and a diaphram.

I have one box call and it serves two purposes. It is LOUD which is great for distance calling or use in the wind. Also, mine does very well as a gobble call when a rubber band is around the call. A good shake and its a pretty good gobble.

Other than that, I use my slate calls almost exclusively. I carry two slates with 3 different strikers. That gives me greater versatility, several different sounds and they are smaller profile for less movement.

Box call is my #1 call I have with me. I'm very good with mouth calls and slates. I find myself back to a box call as PS stated above they are loud for locating and good in the wind. You can get them to be softer call also. I have many notches on the bottom of the box call I have from birds I called in for me or others.

Also stated above every situation will dictate which call the bird will react to. Keep one of each with you.

My boxcalls get a lot of use as do my slates and mouthcalls. The turkeys always seem to have a preference but it's up to you to figure it out on any given day.

Yep, what they said. I carry two box calls and two slates with a variety of strikers, and also a few mouth calls. Love them all and have no real preference. The turkeys will tell you which one should be your favorite on any given day.
