Anterless Deer

Recommended Posts

Just reading up on the regs again, and i have a question.

I purchased a Firearms license for Season A, and applied for a doe permit, and was successful in getting the doe permit.

I DID NOT BUY A MUZZLELOADER LICENSE AT THE SAME TIME.

If i choose to shoot a buck during season A in a management zone, is that doe permit valid during the muzzleloader season when i buy a muzzleloader license?

Or do i need to use that doe license during firearm A season because it is not valid during Muzzleloader?

I thought when I applied that the anterless lottery deer tags was good for either firearms or muzzy season, but as i'm reading the regulations it seems that i should have bought the muzzy license at thte same time in order for the doe permit to be valid during muzzy also?

I'm Confused, and want some clarification before i do something illegal.

My Intent, is to hunt a management zone the first weekend of season A, if i don't shoot a buck, then i'll go to my lottery zone and harvest that doe during the 2nd weekend of season A. But if i do happen to shoot a buck the first weekend in firearm season A, then i will hunt the managed zone the 2nd weekend of firearms season A and during muzzy season go to the lottery area and fill the doe tag...is that legal if i haven't boughten the muzzy license yet?

Sorry - Long question, but would appreciate the help.

Antlerless deer harvest information

The change was made to more tightly control the antlerless deer harvest in deer areas where permits are limited. Due to the number of exemptions (youth, archery, muzzleloader, disabled permits) the number of antlerless deer taken in some permit areas has exceeded (by a large margin) the number of either-sex permits offered to firearm hunters. The following additional restrictions on antlerless deer harvest include:

• In lottery deer areas (Blue), all firearm and muzzleloader hunters must apply by Sept. 8th if they want to take an antlerless deer. Hunters interested in obtaining one of these permits should apply using either their firearm and/or muzzleloader license. If successful, the permit will be valid during that season only. In order to fairly distribute permits, they will be allocated in proportion to the number of applicants. For example, if 100 permits are offered and 25% of the applicants are muzzleloader hunters, then 25 permits will be allocated for the muzzleloader season. This way, muzzleloader hunters compete with other muzzleloader hunters and not firearm hunters who likely have more preference points. Again, this is being done to reduce the number of antlerless deer harvested.

• In hunter choice areas (Brown), there is no lottery. The license is valid for 1 either-sex deer per year in one hunter choice area.

Exactly what was stated above. If you want a doe permit for muzzy season, you needed to apply for it. The doe permit you have for gun season is valid only in that unit for that particular season. Without applying for a doe permit for muzzy, you will have to shoot a buck.

Successful applicants will receive a postcard in the mail authorizing them

to take an either-sex deer using their regular license. The authorization will

be valid for either the firearm or muzzleloader season; however, you must

still have a valid license for that season....

<Jameson shakes head at DNR every time he reads this>

The Muzzy hunters have less preference points, because they used to get automatic doe tags. They shouldn't have a 'fair' chance, they were favored before and should now be part of the same lottery as everyone else, not just those that have also gotten doe tags every year. grrrrr

Firearm and muzzleloader lottery either-sex permits. If successful in the

lottery, hunters can use their permit in either the firearm or muzzleloader

season, provided they have a valid license for that season. See page 82.

Lol, the statement above is why i didn't buy a muzzy license while applying for a doe tag. Because i figured i could use the doe tag in either season if i later buy a muzzy license. And i know that was new this year. Which is why i didn't buy the muzzy license while applying like i have done in other years. I'll put in a call to the DNR for confirmation. I'd hate to have a doe down during muzzy season and have done it illegially.

Thanks
