How do you start your season?

I know a small, shallow lake that produces nice panfish and has no boat launch and requires a long enough walk to access that it gets very little pressure. Because it is so shallow (10-12'), it freezes over early.

This was where I made my first ice outing last year. I cut a lot of holes on my way from shore to the basin. I found 5", 5", 5", 5", 5", 2"-panic! I followed my footsteps back to the 5" mark and fished shallow. I fished about 6 FOW and caught some crappies in the weeds.

I plan to go to the same lake this year, but I think I'll just stick shallow to begin with and not risk finding thinner ice in the basin area.

I fished relatively big baits-using the smallest swedish pimple and the smallest chubby darter. I am going to try and get confident with plastics this year, so I'll downsize a bit and give them the first shot. I bought some little atom micro nuggies and some horizontal jig heads. Can't wait to try 'em. I am considering launching a canoe and trying some pre-ice fishing in the area to locate fish before freeze-up, but we'll see if I can make the time.

How do you start your season? What strategies will you use before houses and trucks and power augers enter the picture?

we will see what the cold weather brings. i normaly go just a little north of Duluth to a small lake after Thanksgiving, a week or two after. usualy i have found 5 to 6 inches of ice at that time and fish shallow in 8 feet of water. although there are plenty of walleys in this lake we seem to get more crappies though, along with small pike for pickling or fish patties. the crappies are nice and the long drive is always worth it for us. it is a dark stained lake so the best bite i have found is mid day and the bite trails of after 4 to 5 PM.

we have found the best baits are medium fatheads with a red hook under the bobber and dead sticking with light line with a red/white tear drop jig with euro larva. we do put out a couple of tip ups also with fatheads. never cought any big pike in there so i dont use dead bait there. but the walleys are quality and so are the crappies. all i take is my flip up portable and hand auger.good luck.

First time out I always go with some one who is bigger than me with full sled. I then follow 20 feet back grin

Honestly, I let others get out first to test the ice.

Plastics work well, especially for crappies. Fish them with confidence, change your movements with plastics from erratic to pulsing, to being still, you will find out what they want.

I start out waiting. Waiting for the wheelers before i walk, and then wait to drive my car until i see trucks, then wait to drive my truck until after the superduties pulling the mansions appear.

Pretty much the way it works for me too.

Well said - I do the same except I do not have a truck yet.

I am starting today trying to figure out a better way to fit 3 cars and a fish house into a garage not big enough for 3 cars. It works every year but I always want to figure out a better way. If this is my biggest problem this year it will be a good year.

As I get older I am not sure the wiser part came along with it.

I still am usually one of the first to hit the local lakes, venturing out with 2-3" of ice to get some early biters.

Not sure its really worth it, my best bites have came when I could be really mobile with the wheeler.

See you on thin ice... eek

I was very good at waiting until last year. I went out that one time and then gave it about a week. We had a big snow in between and the whole lake was slush the next time out. I'm just hoping a strong cold snap hits this year before the first big snow. I haven't seen sheet-of-glass ice for several years now. Maybe I'll chase the smarter guys north this year.

I am young and stupid so I go out as soon as there is 2 inches of ice. But I do take a lot of safety precautions like bring life jacket, ice pick and etc. I only fish the shallow lakes like around 3-4 feet deep when the ice is thinner like that. I also never drive on the lake until after i see several big trucks out there and a good amount a permanent houses.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
