Down the hole

When I was a teenager, I was out icefishing with my dad and some relatives. I was jigging for walleyes, when I pulled up some braided tip up line. I made a comment about it, and just as I was about to put it back down the hole (since we were using some tip ups that day), here comes dad diving over. He grabs the line, on one end is the tip up he lost down the ten inch hole the day before, and a three pound walleye on the other end.

Do you remember those nighthawk black lights that you would use to illuminate your fishing line so it looked like rope at night?

Lost two of those in one season. They had those darn suction cups on them that would evenly let go, no matter where you put it in the fishhouse it would take that one in a million bounce off of something and bloop! Down the hole it goes...

i always get a kick out this yearly thread grin It's a signal that ice is coming like falling leaves and frost in the mornings.

I made it another year with great luck on keeping my stuff. I have only been ice fishing for 5 or 6 years but I haven't lost anything other than a handful of depth bombs and jigs. i know my luck will eventually run out though.

I saw a buddy's cell fancy smartphone go down last year. Hole in one off his lap when he stood up. There were 6 of us in command post type hub house and we got a pretty good laugh at his $400 expense as the line went down on the vexilar. We sent him a bunch of text messages and left voicemails on the bottom of the lake.

Oh and my wife's leg went about mid thigh deep down the hole last year. It was a quick trip that day.

Knocked my fillet knife off the counter and down the hole, didn't realize it at first. In the morning I couldn't figure out what the blip on my flasher was that never moved. Put the camera down the hole to see my knife sticking in the bottom of the lake with the handle straight up. A friend of mine was trying to retrieve a walleye from between the ice and the bottom of the shack at Red lake last year when she kicked my tipup down another hole. I fished it out in the morning with my camera and a crankbait, second time that happened and got it back both times.

Last year on Red one of the guys lost a power strip down the hole. Two nights later we had a jingle on a rattle reel so someone grabs it, doesn't seem like anything is there but doesn't feel quite right. Pulls up the power strip! We figured a fish grabbed the bait and went a little ways then ran it under the cord of the power strip got spooked and let go.

In the winter of 2009 I lost 2 pairs of glasses and 3 cell phones down ice holes. Seems like the holes are magnets to stuff when it happens to fall out. In my case they were sitting on the table and the table got bumped.

Im not sure if it was the same year or not but I had just bought one of them pager tip up alert things and was setting it up for the 1st time. I had the pager clipped on in a pocket of my inside shirt. It managed to fall off and fall down the hole. I didnt even get to turn it on yet.

Ah the precious moments we have, ice scoops, coffee cups, keys. Nothing is safe in the fishhouse. I am always amazed that no matter where you put things they always have that icehole magnet on them... I've heard that BLOOP sound more then I care to admit... :-)

A few years ago I was fishing in the porty with my brother. I stood up and my head knocked the lantern down. The lantern somehow fell straight down the hole. Immediately we were sitting in darkness. After a couple minutes sitting there deciding what to do we noticed bubbles coming up from the hole (propane). We put a jigging spoon down the hole and were able to retrieve the lantern in a few minutes. Got lucky that something that size went straight down to the bottom of the lake I guess. We stuck some new mantels on her and fired her back up. The only damage was some cracked glass from hitting the cold water.

Last year I went to grab my phone off the bunk to answer a call and slapped it across the house and straight into a hole. The next morning I could see it sitting on the bottom. I took the handle off the broom and taped it to the ice scoop. Shoulder deep in the hole I was able to scoop it up. Never did dry out enough to work right again though. Alcohol invovled? Maybe.

A few years ago my brother dropped his cell phone down the hole in 30+ feet of water. Put a line of jigs down, managed to hook the antana of the phone and pull it up. Not sure that will ever happen again!!

I'm guessing that won't happen again since we don't have those little pull up antennas anymore laugh

on a somewhat related story, a couple years ago I was shore fishing the mississippi and hooked into an ancient cell phone. I'm talking one of those ones that looks like you could call in air support from Da Nang. At least I got it out of the river smile

My bro-in-law was texting on his phone the year before last. I tripped and bumped into his hand and his phone flew straight down the hole that was at least 5' away. Luckily it was a cheap phone but unfortunately all his contacts were lost down the hole.

Last year on Red a guy in our group lost his brand new iPhone 4 down the hole. They were only in 10' of water. I would have tried to retrieve it but he just pouted and had his grandpa pick him up all the way from the cities to bring him home since none of us were willing to cut our trip short because he was sad. Even with water damage it would have had some substantial value.

I've personally never lost anything of great value - only scoops, flashlights, rattle reels, etc.

I love this annual thread.

My daughter dropped a hotdog down the hole once. I was able to fish it out since I hadn't even cleared all the slush from the hole yet. No, I didn't make her eat it, just threw it out to some dogs that where hangin around outside looking for scraps. Guess they were hangin around the right house!

i lost my cell phone down the hole last winter. all the time i knew this could happen since i had it in my jacket pocket. no luck trying to retrieve it. my brother and his buddy and i were in a house up in mille lacs. my brother's buddy droped his military flashlight down one of the holes still on.

we were in about 20 feet of water and it was in the evening. we could see the light on the bottom of the lake. these military flashlights are kind of L shaped. he wanted to get that flashlight back in the worst way. i video'd almost the whole retrieval adventure. got it on a old vcr tape. after many try's, my brother put on a couple of jigs and some spoons all at once. sure enough a hook from all that mess grabed the flashlight and up it came.

you should of seen my brothers buddies emotions as my brother slowly lifted it up to the surface. "carefull" "carefull" moans, and groans, ect. when it finaly was in his hands with the light still on he was screaming and yelling and high five'ing as if he just watched his team win the super bowl. i still watch that tape once in a great while and still laugh out loud. good luck.

This is the honest truth, you can not make this up...

A few years ago my little brother and I were on a local lake in my buddies porty that I borrowed. It was the first time my brother had been on the ice, he was about 12 or 13. After I punched our holes and got all set up, I rigged up his line for the standard "beginner" setup consisting of just a minnow and a bobber.

About an hour later I stepped out for a smoke but left the flap of the door open to keep an eye on him, then I heard a splash followed by him starting to yell. I thought he dropped his bottle of pop down the hole or something, but low and behold when I came back in his whole rod was gone!

I shrugged it off only because it was an old rod that I didnt really use anymore, but he didnt take it as lightly as I did. Not 10 minutes after I had gotten him ready to fish again I hooked into a decent sized northern. When I got it up to the hole I noticed that it had a hook and line in its mouth that looked familiar. When I started pulling on the line it got heavier and when I got to the end of the line I was shocked at what I found. It was the same rod my little brother was using not 20 minutes before! My brother was as surprised as I was and now thats his lucky ice rod that he uses every year. We ended that day with our limit of slough shiners and a couple good crappies to boot.

last year i lost the first thing ever down the hole - my waterproof camera. Down a 4 inch hole, to boot. One in a million chance. Slipped out of my pocket as I leaned over.

Now I have a small section of pool noodle tied to my camera, so it floats

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
