Got three Grays this morning

Recommended Posts

It's been a great 24 hours to say the least. Tagged a nice buck last night(read about it in the archery forum) and got up early this morning and ended up with 3 Grays and saw 4 total. Not too bad.

I went to bed around 11 and set the alarm for midnight. Apparently I was too tired but ended up getting up at 1 A.M. It was a great morning, clear and calm. The leaves are extremely noisy so you can here them a mile away. I tried two spots around home with no takers so headed a little farther away. I parked the truck and headed down a trail to an intersection near a thick swamp. I'm facing North with the trail running East/West. I start the call and immediately here what sounds like a heard of deer running directly at me from the West. I hit the light and she's about 20 yards away. She pops out about 10 feet away, yes feet. Way too close to shoot so I let her spook and run back. She stops and I shoot. She spins and disappears. I see eyes 5 feet from where I shot and shoot agian. I go over and find one big female and start looking for another. I walk around for 15 minutes and can't find a thing. I know there was at least two that came in from the noise. I walk back to the caller and lay the female down and here something running through the brush. I hit the light and it locks up. I put on distress and it starts running my way. I lip squeek it to a stop and take the shot. Ended up being a small male. must have been her pup. I head back to the truck and off to another spot.

I tried a spot with nothing so I headed a little farther to try one more spot. Mitch had lost a fox at this spot last winter when I tracked it about 1/4 mile and then it went down a hole.

I'm at a crossing of two trails. North/South and East/West. I parked my truck about 70 yards South of me. The moon is rising and I'm starting to see shadows. Making me a little nervous. I forgot to shut off my remote and when I go to unmute it, it starts at max volume from the last set. Perfect. I tone it down and let it play for 20 minutes off and on. I hear nothing. All of a sudden one is barking at me from the SE,downwind of me. I can hear it running through the brush. I hit my light and I can see him about 70 yards out. I hit pup distress and he gets a little closer

but won't commit. I shut off the caller and listen to him make his way to the North. I see him directly East of me. Then it sounds like one is coming hard from the West. I look over in time to see it jump out of the ditch and stand there 50 yards out. It see's me in the moonlight and stops, turns and runs back 10 yards and looks back. I turn the caller back on and here it comes, right at me. I stop it with a lip squeek agian and drop the female. I assume the other was a male and hopefully we'll meet up with him later this fall. I'm going to try and get out agian tonight and hopefully I'll have more to post tomorrow.
