Shooting signs!

Recommended Posts

Was grouse hunting in a state forest this past week and I am getting tired of seeing various forest signs being shot up by idiots. What are these moronic people thinking when doing this? These people shouldn't even be allowed to have a license to hunt!!

Who says they have one?

One of my pet peeves!

What's the point? It isn't like they are a challenge to hit!

That said though, I would much rather these knuckleheads shoot signs than songbirds, skunks, or people...

I does drive me crazy when I see the signs shot up, same with cans out in the middle of the woods! Can never believe how many beer cans I see hanging in a tree 200yds off the nearest trail and riddled with shot holes! Seriously?! Dang people! Get out of your truck, into the woods, and scare up some grouse to shoot...

What people need to understand is that those sign cost money to replace, tax money. First of all its a matter common sense and ethics. Since I know some people in society are lacking those, it is also illegal.

As far as shooting songbirds and skunks, if they are unprotected, then it is legal, however leaving them to rot is not legal. I'm all for shooting skunks. They are nest raiders.

people that do this are not hunters. as others have said, we pay for these signs. they are there for a purpose and it's not for target practice. this is also dangerous. there are plenty of places to go to site in your weapons. the public land is not the place for this. shooting at random on a road is dangerous and foolish. all rifles should be set to go before you go hunting. our forests are to be enjoyed and should be a safe place to hunt and appreciate the gift we have here in Minnesota. good luck

Take a look at the list of birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. You would be amazed what actually is protected under this act. Way more birds are protected than you think. Most songbirds migrate, therefor are protected under MBTI. A lot of people falsely think that MBTI is just waterfowl related. According to the USFWS HSOforum, currently 836 bird species are protected under this law. So, be careful on what you pull the trigger on when you're getting board out there.

Here's the list: Birds protected under MBTI

Of course I meant MBTA, not MBTI.

I don't do it, nor do I support it, I'm just saying if they are an unprotected species, then it is legal, no matter how anyone feels about it.

Sorry if you thought I was blaming you for doing it. I was not implying that at all, so I apologize if it came off that way. I was just trying to point out that there are far more protected birds out there than folks think.

Agreed. Another one is Litter. As we were driving the Forest roads up by Chisholm this weekend. We noticed so many beer cans, tv's, old dressers, and other garbage no matter where we go. Do people really care this little about our natural areas?!!? Forest signs all shot up and litter everywhere.

where we deer hunt it is public land. i've hunted this area since the sixties. just the last 3 years someone is using our area as a dump zone. refrigerator, 2 lawn mowers and garbage. we have removed most of this stuff [my brother lives in duluth, he disposed of it]. i would love to catch these people. i did notify the county. that gravel road also has every sign on it decorated with bullets. these shots were taken so the bullet, if missed, would travel down the road for a long ways and i dont know how far the bullets that went through have traveled. good luck.

I interviewed with a company that rebuilds substation transformers. They said most of their fixes they do are from hunters who are out and about and shoot transformers. I am sure some are on accident, and others on purpose but the cost to repair one of them is 100-500k. INSANE. Don't shoot stuff!!!!

Or if you have the stomach for it, and a good pair of rubber gloves, take a little dig in a bag or two. You'd be amazed how many of those knuckle-heads will leave mail and magazines with address on them in the bags. I knew a guy who found some mail in a bag once, took the stuff back to the address and chucked it back in their front yard. Classic!!
