Any opinions on 10's

Recommended Posts

I had the pleasure of shooting an SP10 on the regular season goose opener as well as a Remington 1100(thanks uncle!) My opinion was that the recoil on the 10 felt about equal to the 12 and it felt really comfortable to shoulder and swing. Mind you I didn't hit a thing but I did have chances to shoot...

I dont think that they are obsoltete but I think its more of a cost vs issue with most guys also I have shot and owned a Browning BPS 10ga and a old Italian made double 10ga I have also shot a Remington sp 10 ga and the Browning and I would have to say that the one I liked the most overall was the Remington sp 10. I shot 7 boxes of shells thru the sp 10 and it was a dream to shoot if I was going to only hunt geese I would choose the ten over the tweleve gauge and put a good aftermarket choke on it and bulid it for goose hunting.

What I like about the tens are the weight for when you start swinging for the lead you cant stop so you tend to be on more for your lead( at least thats for me anyhow)

My BPS was nice but it didnt fit me like I thought it should but I still shot it and did well with it.

The double ten well lets just say that after shooting it someone would have to pick um my shoulder for me grin

I know a handfull of guys hat hunt with 10's and they all own Remingtons sp 10s and none of them have had a failure as of yet or at least they dont admit it. they make 7-10 day journeys to Canada each year and there 10s are what they shoot the most.

I asked my one friend that shoots a Rem SP 10 what he thought the difference was from that to a 3 1/2 12ga and his reply was 15-20 yards and He also stated that he has proved that.

I traded a BPS 10 for the Gold 10 when they first came out in 1994. I know a half dozen guys that have the BPS and the only one that likes his is 6'-3" tall and has long arms. I have shot them all and the Gold 10 is by far the most comfortable and best swinging of all of them. I also shoot a Beretta Extrema and the 10 is FAR more powerful than the 3.5 12ga. Ammo is about the same price if you shop smart. I put a Patternmaster choke in it and have made clean kills at very long ranges. I saw one for sale a few weeks ago. If I had the extra $, I would have picked it up just to have a another one. The ONLY trouble I had was after cleaning it for the first time. The guts look like an 1100 but they go together slightly different...

If you need a 10ga I think your not waiting long enough. I blow the grap outta some and theres nothing left I could believe what they would look like if I was using a 10. most days I wished I had a 20ga along

just my2c

Who said anything about need? To be honest, its not my experience that the 10's mess them up a he11uva lot worse than 12's. Maybe if you're blowing the grap out of them then sometimes you're waiting too long. wink I'm not trying to be too much of a smartace - to be honest I don't take long shots at all - partly cause I was brought up only shooting birds that are in the decoys and partly cause even if you have a gun that will kill at long ranges you need to be able to hit at long range. I don't have confidence in my long range hitting ability.

My main gun is a Browning Gold 12 but I also shoot a 20, 16, or 10 depending on the situation - its just fun for me to mix it up a bit.

The reason for the post is that I have a BPS 10 but am sick of the recoil and don't like pumps. I thought of just getting a 12 that would shoot 3.5 shells but I love my old Gold and don't really want to take it out of the mix for regular duckin. I'm thinking of trading up from my BPS so I have an auto for goose exclusive trips.

I've killed way more geese with my 12 than I have with my 10 but I guess I just kinda dig the bark of the 10. That being said, my experience is that the 10 has flat out killed more on the first shot and crippled fewer.

Just the ramblings of a guy who just got a NoDak trip whacked due to work so I'm trying to find something to spice up the season a bit...

I've had a BPS for nearly 20 years. Its been a good gun, and I've taken a lot of birds with it. Yes it swings slow, it's heavy, and the recoil is significant. When the weather gets nasty and windy, its what I reach for. The recoil has never bothered me.

Most of the time I shoot a 12 now, but it's nice to have that 10 when the situation calls for it.

Whatever you get, get it before I head for my second week of NoDak-in' so I can take it with wink oh yeah, you can't make it... again.... wink

I had to shoot Mark's BPS 12 a few times last weekend (due to leaving my Gold in the other truck...), and I forgot how much I dislike pumps, and how much I dislike BPS long arm style, and your 10 is even longer, so I am glad I didn't take it. I would get the Gold 10, you know the gun and the fit, it is just a tad heavier.

Only thinig I would say is if you had a 3.5" auto, you would only have to take one kind of ammo wink

Well it sounds like you already know what you wanted before you asked the question, so why don't you grap or get off the pot.

Nope I actually didn't. There are lots of used Ithacas out there - a few SP10's - and very few Golds. I was interested in some opinions from those who've used some of those. I think I've heard about Ithacas jamming enough to cross them off the list (which is too bad cause my wallet would sure like that gun). I'm still wavering between the Browning and the Remington. Also, a guy who offered me a few bucks for my BPS backed out so I gotta find out what its worth in trade.
