Burn Questions

Few questions on bear burns.

1. What kind of sterno can is best? Wick or no wick?

2. What kind of honey? The cheap artificial stuff or the expensive real stuff?

3. Should the honey be mixed with water or straight up?

Thanks! I plan on a burn sat. evening if i don't see my bear fri.

As far as burns go. I used the 2 lb can inside of a 5 lb can. I used the small sterno cans (no wik). I have not seen the ones with a wik.

I think the pure honey is the way to go. No water- it will burn off anyway. You want the honey to buble and puff honey smoke.

When you do a burn it will bubble up and run over the side of the can if you use to much. You also would probably try and keep the smaller can an inch or so over the flame.

I am working off of my memory on the burns I did several years ago. I did 3 one with bacon, 1 with honey and several with the Big Paw- by Bear Scents- it smelled incredible and bubbled over the sides of the can and bubbled for a long long time. I believe that the honey reacted the same with all of the sugars in it.

Good Luck

Be very careful with the flames in the woods. Clear a large area down to bare soil.

I like the wick cause you can controll the height of the flame, any honey works, cheap is best cause its still honey. my suggestion would be to try one first in the garage an jsut see how it gose so you can make adjustments. A proper burn will take awhile, wat you dont want is to imedeatly heat up an burn the honey. I would use JB's sugestions with the can upside down an a smaller can on top. With the wik type you can adjust the flame so it heats up, boils over an sizzles on the big can. No mixing have i ever heard of so a no there. Make sure you clear a space on the ground if its dry in your area. If its dry in ur area an crunchy leaves have some one take you in an drop u off, bear cant count. Dont let him near your site, he's just there to drop u off. wen your done baiting climb into stand an send him off. Have him scent free as possible if you do this. Good luck OD, Hope to see pics. on Sunday. Boar

I did a few Mollasses burns a few yrs ago and it worked well but I did have on big fire blow up! Which sounds common on the first few tries. I'll put the small can in the big can. The jam with jello mix sounds good too, I may try that. Thanks for all the pointers guys. I'm a totally self taught hunter so just about everything in hunting has been a learning adventure the past 10 yrs, but it sure has been fun!

Drilled the holes and tried it out in the garage, worked like a million bucks(only cost 1.69$)! What a nice set up. I used a camp stove before and it was a big mess and I started a big fire with it once, the regulator melted off and propane was gushing out on fire! This will work great guys. Thanks again for the great idea.

We make our with thick gauge wire hoisting a soup can up in a coffee can, put coals or the sterno underneath. The soup can hangs suspended. Works pretty well. I've only tried honey and molasses. Always wanted to get enough pure bcaon grease to do a burn. I bet that works like a charm! If I ate that much bacon I'd have a heart attack trying to climb the stand though.... wink

Yes I have a pretty good set up. I'm in a big 4 plex oak where I built a perm. The crib in about 40 yrds. in front of me on a little hill at nearly my level. Got many deer out of the same spot where the crib is. Hopefully the gods are with me tonight! it has been along week!!!! Luckily my angel baited wed. and it had been hit, unfortunatly he is too old to operate a digital camera or sd card but he said it was hit since sun.
