MN Moose Tag

Recommended Posts

Who has one for this year, and who has hunted them in the past.

We pulled a tag this year for zone 36, the only zone not accessible by road inside the boundary waters. We are heading up this weekend to do some scouting and check out some gear for the main trip. We have 5 days this weekend, and then plan to hunt the entire 2 week season out of canoes and packs. It is a once in a lifetime experience, so we plan on doing it the right way.

Any words of advise?

Where, exactly, are you planning on going? I can't give you much advice other than practice, practice, practice. (Both with firearms and canoes, and with your body and other random gear. Get in shape mentally and physically.)

What I can do is help you out with a topo map and satellite image of the area you plan to hunt. Can you get me some coordinates from Google Earth or the lakes/ rivers that bound your area, along with some major point of reference (i.e. distance and direction from Ely or an entry point)?

You don't happen to be hunting with NoWiser (Jim G.), do you? I know he's up in the BWCA somewhere... I did this same thing for him, so he'd have the maps if you are hunting with him.

Make sure you are practicing your calling a lot. Try to get it to the point where you are consistent. On a calm morning your call will carry for miles, and they will come in from a long ways away. Put your time in and you will get one. Thats when the fun begins. I shot one in 2009.

I purchased a video on calling and it helped a lot. Good luck

for that zone a boat ride on the canadian side of lac lacroix would make sense. Hauling guns and game through canada to do it ...... I don't know. You can use a boat for a short distance on the us side of lacroix.

There is a reason it is the easiest draw at 12% chance. It is a FemaleDog to get to, and even harder to get one out.

We had looked at a boat portage through LacCroix, but figured at least one other group out of 5 would do that, and there is another easier access on the east end by Fourtown and Horse Lake, so at least one group would do that. That kinda leaves us alone in the middle of the zone.

I have always been willing to do what the other guys won't, and I hope this transfers into a big bull moose. We don't plan on coming out unless time runs out, or we are hoisting a moose. Should be a great trip, but hard and rewarding.

Spent the holiday weekend scouting our area for 4 days. Found some great areas to hunt, and have our #1, 2, and 3 spots figured out. Broke camp Monday morning and traveled hard to get back to the truck. 4 hours, 8 portages (most small) and some sweat and we made it back. Checked the GPS when we were back and we had done 8.5 miles that morning grin

I figure if we get a moose down in that area, we will have a full 2 days of portaging to get it out, with a spike camp set up somewhere along the way. Hard work, but for a once in a lifetime hunt, something we are all comfortable with.

We were able to check out all our gear and did expose some weaknesses in gear that will need to be shored up, and also realized I need to find a good way to strengthen my canoeing muscles. Dang they are sore this morning.
