Question

borrowed my boat to a buddy, he whacked a rock and took couple inch sized chunks outta the skeg and ruined the aluminum prop . Whats the average price on skeg repair? Would it be better to just put a skeg guard on instead?

Also what else and how to check for other internal damage? Yammaha 115 4 stroke

If he hit the rock that hard, have a dealer take a look at it. Could be the output shaft took a hit as well. And please forget the bandaid of the skeg cover and have it repaired the RIGHT way. As a neutral party, it's easy for me to say... the boat left fully operational and it should be returned in that same condition. BUT... that's not for me to determine.

Good luck with what ever you choose to do.

Not a bad idea to take it to dealer, but you can check to see if the prop shaft is bent by yourself too. If it's obviously bent, you'll see it easily. Put it neutral and spin the prop. If deadcenter of the shaft has a "wobble" to it when you spin the prop, you've got issues. If you can't see it, I'd still get it checked out to be certain. It can take a while to wear the seals out if out of round, but you're better off getting it fixed. Then you don't have to worry.

A co-worker recently went through this, sort of. He was trolling with a late 90's 90hp Evinrude and hit a rock. It bent his skeg and damaged the prop slightly. By slightly I mean you could barely tell he had hit anything. He continued to use it for a few more days. When he pulled the drain plugs out of the lower unit, he noticed metal shavings had collected on the magnetic probes. Cost him nearly $1,500.00 for a rebuilt lower unit and prop, and he removed it from the outboard and re-installed it himself. That was with an aluminum prop.

I would definitely have it looked at.
