I think just finding a taxidermist in your area willing to mentor you would be the best way. I took up taxidermy on my own in the late 90's. I felt I was pretty decent at it but didn't know a lot of the tricks. Then about a decade ago I went to Pine Tech. for a year in Taxidermy. This program is shut down now but it did help me hone my skills a lot. Its nice to have someone SHOW you, but trying it on your own and a subscription to Breakthrough cant teach you a lot too. Practice, Practice, Practice and be 100% open to critisizmn and new ways to do things.

Have fun and good luck!

Slimmgrissly hit it on the head if your looking to get into the art of Taxidermy. I started by practicing on whatever I could get my hands on first. I purchased some books and vids to help me along the way. I finally became decent enough and knowledgeable enough, and least in my option, to go to taxidermy school. Here I was able to hone in my skills and techniques, which has brought me to where I am today in taxidermy. Be patient...but I think its best to have a base under yourself, do your homework first so-to speak. Then look at 1 on 1 or class setting taxidermy school. I think you will be much better off. It worked for me I know and i was happy I took that approach.

Good luck.
