Angstman
So I bought a Buck Gardner "Honker Hammer" goose call last fall and the guts and reed it came with are total junk, I mean I cant even make a cluck with it. So I was wondering if any of you had recommendations for different guts. Keep in mind that I'm a novice when it comes to goose calls, but I had my friend look at the call and he said to get the guts and reed replaced. Finlander
Send the guts into Gardners and i'll bet you he'll replace them for free!
Superduty
Let me start by saying that I am far from a great short reed goose caller. I can cluck and moan but certainly won't win any contests. Killed a few geese in my day though. I owned a Buck Gardner call back in the day when I was first learning to blow a short reed. Not the easiest call to blow and IMO they don't sound good either. Lots of other brands out there that are easier to blow and sound better, regardless of your price range.
carpshooterdeluxe
What is wrong with the guts and reed that came with the call? BG calls are typically tuned very user friendly. Unless your reed is blistered or cracked, or for some reason your guts are loose, I would bet all you need to do is tune the call to your liking. JimBuck
Yeah I struggled learning on my Canada Hammer for a while too. I had a friend tune it up for me and it made the learning process much easier for me.

I'm not sure that the problem is the guts, but the reed. When I took it apart I noticed that the reed was cut short on one side, making me have to blow too much air in the call. Replacing the guts was just a recommendation from a friend who said to get some that are easier to use, since this is my first goose call. I can use a duck call just fine, but I think I just have to put more time into learning how to blow a goose call.
walleyeslammer
Before you buy new guts, try retuning it. Make a mark on the reed where it is now as a reference before starting and then us the wedge to have less of the reed showing. I have tuned a few of those for people who were struggling and they were clucking in minutes.
Maxxed Out
Gander kind of sucks for waterfowling but you could try going to the new Lakeville Gander and see if there is someone at the shop who can tune it for you. Since you're just getting into it I think tuning it yourself would be challenging. Either that or if you can wait a week you can swing in my booth at Gamefair and myself or one of my guides will get it tuned up for you. Muthagoose
If you own a call you should learn how to change reeds and tune it.. Go on youtube and theres a few videos. Even foiles has a video how.. Played with a hammer this spring, put halfbred guts in one and it rolled easy.Infact I put my order in for one from the IWF coming up.Add one to the collection.Caleb from BLD/TF is going to be in the booth next to Bucks so I should be getting one.Green and black pearl.... They are inexpensive calls but they sound great.Hard to beat for $60.
Quackaddict9
My guess is that you may need a new reed. Sometimes they get white bubbles in it, get worn out, vibrate too much so the Guts could be fine unless there is something major with it. You will learn fast how to tune your calls when you learn how to do it. But keep in mind the more you do the less fit the Guts will fit in your insert... Sending it to Buck will be a good idea, or go to Game Fair and have someone help ya out.
