Fluoro leader on jigging rod

Recommended Posts

I am going to LOTW next week with 3 other guys. While we will mostly be pulling spinners and cranks, we will be doing some jigging if we find pockets of fish grouped together. All 4 rods will have braid, and on 2 of the 4 we will tie the jig directly to the braid, and the other 2 I will put a 10 ft. fluoro leader tied to the braid. I'll report the results when I get back. Does anyone else out there use a fluoro leader with their braid? If so, have you noticed a difference?

I began using a leader about a year ago and yes, I did seem to see a result with regard to bites. I tie mine on using a uni-uni knot.

I always use a 3' leader of floro when I jig the Erie reefs, even when the water looks like coffee. I've had buddies on board that thumbed their noses at the idea. When I'm netting my tenth fish in the first fifteen minutes of fishing, and they haven't had a sniff, they ask me if I have any floro on board. I use a tiny micro swivel to connect the two lines, since there is a lot of current in Erie, and line twist is a factor.

If you aren't worried about the line twist, just use a uni-uni knot (or any butt to butt knot) instead of a swivel and you don't have to worry about a swivel running through your nice shiny guides wink

I've tried albright knots, but they seem to pull out with bigger fluoro or cut through with smaller.

With out a doubt you will catch more fish jigging with a floro leader. This year alone, for opener on Leech (snap jiggin) and on very coffee stained waters in Hayward in July (verticle jiggin). I was fishing with diffrent guys that I was out fishing at least 4-1. Difference was I was using a floro leader with my fire line and they were not. As soon as they put a floro leader on their line+jig, the catch rate was close to even.

I also use a uni-uni knot (considered albright, but uni has never failed me), ~four foot 8# Suffix Floro leader. Tried Vanish and hated it, seemed to break off way too easily. Only time a use a small swivel to connect the floro leader is with my trolling rigs.

I was considering using the braid/flouro combo for trolling cranks but was wondering how much flouro you would recommend tying on and how well the lures dive with the braided line? Also what pound test braid do you guys use for walleye stuff?

For walleye, I would use 8-10# braid, and uni-uni knot flouro/mono of similar size. Length of leader depends on water clarity. Anywhere from 3' to 30'.

A 10 pound test braid is typically compared to a 4# diameter mono.

So it will dive deeper.

If you have 30' of 10# flouro as a leader, then you will not get any extra depth (Maybe some if your long lining) because the resistance of the flouro will make your lure dive as if you were only using flouro.
