YES...how you fish them? Well thats up to you. Spinner rig if u want to drown them. Otherwise a plain hook with some weight on it and cast out.

Anybody else have some good ideas how to rig a live frog?

Actually lots of huge walleyes have been caught on frogs in shallow water at night.

And keep those hooks sharp!

Lots of catfisherman use frogs, its the bait of choice at this time of year. Lots of big walleyes are caught this way.

Couple weeks ago, my brother landed about a 3-4 pound walleye on a frog fishing cats. Not a monster walleye but definitely a nice walleye.

He was essentially live bait rigging in the river. Either fixed or sliding sinker, 2-3 feet of snell and a hook with a frog. Very simple.

It's definitely worth your time to try some frogs. It seems to get better as it gets colder too. I know it is a great tactic for river fishing with a regular slip sinker rig and I have also watched guys thread them on a max gap jig and retreave real slow along the river bottom. Night time does seem to work best for the frog bite for some reason, down here anyways. Keep those frogs as long as you can. When you stop seeing them on land it usually means they have gone to the river bottoms to sleep for the winter. They are real slow and make easy targets so save those frogs and find a soft muddy river bottom and see what happens.

Spent many a night (fall usually) with my Dad trolling live frogs on the surface. Plain hook, no weight, lot's of line out and in very shallow water! Also fished them a lot shore fishing weighted to the bottom with about 1.5' leader. The frogs have been doing the "to the lake, away from the lake" thing for about a week now. Shore fishing should be good pretty soon. smile.gif

I can remember a lake I used to fish back in S. Central Mn that had a huge frog migration. It really did'nt matter if you used frogs or not. Many times we would just cast large cranks at night to catch the larger walleyes. We also would catch frogs and hook them through the mouth, cast them out and let them swim back to shore. It was amazing how shallow the walleys would hit them frogs. Sometimes in only a few iches of water.

Walleyes love frogs. Things should really heat up for the frog bite in the next 3-4 weeks. This is usually the mass movement from grass, ditches and small sloughs to the lake. Lots of eyes shallow in the dark. Lip or leg hook them with a sinker or without. Some have success using them on a jig as well.

I fished a walleye tourney a couple years ago where the winners fished live frogs out in deep water on jigs (30' levels).. It is something I'm sure those fish hadn't seen much of before. They brought in some really nice fish. It was one of those things that I will always remember. Don't be afraid to try something different - sometimes that is what it takes!
