What are some of your guys' favorite books and DVDs on bass. Have any of them helped you become a better angler?

..I've read Iaconelli's book "Fishing on the Edge", the In-Fishermen book on largemouths and watched the In-Fisherman "Primetime Smallmouth" DVD..

I'm especially curious about the following:

1) Glen Lau's "Big Mouth" DVD and "Bass Forever" Book

2) KVDs books "Secrets of a Champion" and "Bass Strategies"

3) In-Fisherman's Smallmouth bass book

Hiya -

Couple thoughts:

Glen Lau - "Bigmouth" video... Oh man. When I was a kid working at Camp Fish in Walker, "Bigmouth" played on a loop every time kids were checking in or out of camp. I saw it 30 times a summer for 10 years. I bet I could narrate the whole thing word for word with the sound off. There isn't much in the way of fishing how to in the videos, but the video itself is pretty neat. It was filmed in Crystal Springs, FL, in gin clear water, and there's some amazing footage. One sequence shows a bass inhaling and spitting out a crankbait with two trebles multiple times and the angler never knew it'd hit. Just fun to watch, pretty dated, but entertaining.

KVD's Bass Strategies is well worth it. Some very good information in it I think, including some good stuff on how he prefishes, etc. Very well worth it, IMHO. One of the things I really appreciated was that he didn't pimp sponsors at all. He talked about Strike King cranks some in very specific examples, but other than that he's very neutral on brands. There were a couple things in there that really made me rethink a few things.

In-Fish smallmouth book... Some good info, but a lot of the stuff on techniques is pretty dated. Still valuable as a basic source of information, but an awful lot has been learned about smallmouth behavior since it was written.

Some other good media pieces are the Angling Edge DVDs. They have the best video quality hands down. Yeah, they get pretty blatant about the product plugs, but so does everyone else, and the info they have is very very solid.

Of the list though, the KVD book is a must.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

My Picks:

Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers (by the staff at Fishing Facts Magazine) With inspiration from giants Bill Binkleman and Buck Perry, these gentlemen created the seminal work on gamefish location and movement. Most of what the Lindners would create came from this gem. Not bad for a book written in the early 70's.

Big Bass Magic (Doug Hannon and Horace Carter) Sensible, science-based information on what bass can and cannot do, and how anglers can apply this information. I think about these principles every time I pick up a rod.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish (Dr. Suess) A glimpse at an apocalyptic future of genetic mutations. Truly terrifying.
