2005 Chev Silverado Question

broken line

Question

Noticed yesterday the blower fan for the heat/AC in the truck suddenly stopped working. It does not work on any of the speeds. I checked fuses that seemed like they could be relevant, and all seemed to be ok. Any ideas or suggestions??? I'd prefer to not have to bring it to the shop.

It's common for the blower motor resistor to go out, but when that happens the fan will still work on the highest speed only. Not sure about when it doesn't work at all.

As said before the resistor doesn't usually go all at once. So, if the fuse is good, the next most likely culprit would be the blower motor itself, and after that the switch or connectors. First thing I'd do is turn on the key and put the blower switch to high and give the blower motor a good bump with your hand. Its possible its worn to the point that a brush is sticking and jarring it a bit may get it to come on and pinpoint the problem. If that doesn't work, pull off the connector and check with a test light or volt meter to check for voltage and ground. If there is voltage the blower motor is bad.

I'd take a good look at the connector and the old resistor. It is common for the pins to burn up on both. If the pins in the connector are discolored, melted, or burnt up than replace the pigtail as soon as possible. If you don't the connector will burn up the new resistor in no time.

I just received a recall notice for my 2004 Silverado over the weekend. Chevy is covering the resistor for 10yrs/150k miles. Took it in today (149k on the truck!)and fixed at no charge. Talk with your dealer, Chevy will reimburse for parts if you fixed it yourself.

Interesting. Out of town now, but I wonder if I'll get one for my 04 as well.

Got my notice yesterday. It's still working fine, but I have another 2.5 yrs or 27K miles until the extended warranty runs out for the resistor.

Hmm, never got a notice aboot my 2004 Silverado. Might have to call the dealership tomorrow. I have noticed as of late that when i turn the fan down to 4 from 5 it turns off, then i have to take it to 3 and back up to get it to work at that 4 level. (wouldnt be a problem if it wasn't so stupidly hot outside!)

If you guys own one of these rigs it is in your best interest to get it covered and soon IMO. Chevy wouldnt do this if there wasnt some concern for serious affects.

There could be a potential fire hazard here, so rather than wait til the bitter end to have it replaced, it could be wise to do it now.

I should have saved the plug I pulled from my truck a couple weeks ago. Each of the wires coming out of the plug had two inches of dark brown insulation. These components get way too hot to let them go without checking them out occasionally and replacing them if they start to act up.
