Snap swivels on shad raps?

Recommended Posts

I always use just a small snap when attatching shad raps or other crankbaits to my line.
Well the last time I was fishing the person that was fishing with me was using a ball bearing snap-swivel for trolling shad raps and he was cathing more fish than I was.
I always thought that a snap swivel took the action away from these lures and was better just to use a snap.
Whats your opinion on this?

I normally put my crankbaits on a snap swivel. I sometimes put them on a snap as often as I tie them (not to often). Some cranks that I have, I tied a leader to them so when I want use it all i have to do is attach the leader to the snap then im ready to fish.

I always use a plain light weight snap with a rounded end(allows for more free action). Like others have already said that many other variable may be responsible. Things like length of line out, type of line, depth lure is diving, lure action, wether they were doing pumping and pausing with their rod and color.

Good Luck

Some people have misconceptions that snaps take away from a lures action. Quite the opposite as Borch said. A tight knot directly to a bait can face different directions makeing your bait run improper. Size of snaps are important, smallest that you can get away with and still get the job done. Colors are a factor also. I dont use snaps when live bait fishing, other than leaders for pike and musky. can it be luck?

I troll canks a lot, to me I always use a small, I mean small, snap swivel and do not find any difference. When ever I take a new buddy fishing with me and we crank he spends more time retying and I spend it fishing. It alll depends on the preference. I do believe if you are tying on you should not be using a tight knot, see a rapala package. Just my opinion, not meant to offend anyone.
