Best "dog day's" lake

Recommended Posts

I usually take my oldest son and a friend fishing/camping in northern MN while his brother and sister are at camp (he doesn't like camp). We like to fish walleye's but the time we go is usually July, sometimes August which isn't the best time to catch the eye's. Do you guys have any advice on the best "dog day's" walleye lakes? I'm looking anywhere from Alexandria north to the border. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks ~piker

I would vote for Mille Lacs. In July you can usually do well on the flats with lindy rigs using leeches or crawlers. Late July through August the fishing gets tough unless you are familiar with deep water trolling (leadcore or snap weights), then you can have some fantastic fishing off of the traditional structure. Lots of eaters and even more large fish within the protected slot.

Hey james we have decided to try Winnie for our "dog days" lake. We are going the last weekend in July. How do you fish the lake at this time? Do you use Lindy rigs, trolling, etc? Also I don't need specific spots just types of structure, weeds, etc that you focus on.

Thanks ~piker

We pull cranks in anywhere from 8 feet over the weeds to 13-14 feet over flats. Most of the time I'm in that 10-12 foot range on flats. We leave the last Saturday in July and typically here in another week or so you will start seeing reports of people catching fish on shad raps.
