To me, a slot fish means it is in the specified slot limit for that lake.

Lots of lakes have a 17" to 26" protected slot. I think a fish between 17-26 inches would be a slot fish and would have to go back.

But lots of tournament guys use the term incorrectly ---- they say things like "I got my limit of slots then went after a big one". It's not technically correct but it's becoming a common use of the term.

Years ago Mille Lacs had slot limits for keepers, something like 14-16 inch fish could be kept. So a 14-16 inch fish would be a slot fish in that situation.

yep, like others said, gotta know what "slot" means. could be that you may only keep fish in between the slot, or that you cannot keep any fish in there, if it is a "protected" slot

On the Canadian side of Rainy we have a slot size, fish must be between 13.75 and 17.75 inches to keep. When we talk about slot fish it means we have a fish we can keep .

Simplifying the term "slot"to me always indicated a set of parameters or numbers not necessarily keep or throw back term.c63

Same here. If a lake regulation requires that all fish of a particular species between 17" and 20" must be released then the slot is 17-20". Conversely, if you are only able to keep fish between 17" and 20" and release everything else, the slot is again 17-20".
