Possession limits and gifting fish

Nobody is against gifting fish to someone whom will utilize them. Someone who has a great appreciation for fish as a meal and would not otherwise get it, or is in financial need of them to eat, as long as we do it legally within our own daily possession limit parameters.

I only see a problem with people who feel they need to limit out on every trip and fill the freezer far beyond there reasonable need, or legal limit, and then look for an outlet to get rid of them. Very often they will just go to waist and freezer burn and then end up in the trash or used for cat food.

I believe the overall point of this thread is to be more personally accountable for your own harvest.

Isn't "filling the freezer" against the law in Minnesota? I thought any in the freezer counted against your possession limit. So if you have three in the freezer you are supposed to only have 3 in the livewell, right?

I guess I just feel there are a lot of people who spend good money on fishing gear and that taking more fish then I need and giving it away is just not right. I also have no need to have the feeling that I'm a great provider.

I would rather teach them how the fish.

I work with a girl that raises chickens.. I trade her fresh fish for fresh eggs.. I live in the city and well there are laws against raising chickens in the city.. If I could raise my own I would look into it.. but I cannot.. remember the barter system? Some people still use it

I dont know if I like the idea of bartering fish from public waters for your own personal gain...sounds kinda like selling fish. If you were to raise fish on your own property that would be different. Doesnt sound very legal.

The statement sounds well thought out to me. Yours on the other hand...

Bartering involves receiving goods or services in exchange for other goods or services. Catching fish within your own limit and keeping them for personal use is just that- a legal right to have possession of fish through the purchase of your fishing license. Bartering is merely selling in the absence of a monetary value.

You can gift fish, and someone can gift you eggs, but be careful about how you phrase and think about the exchange.

Yeah, but ethically it is the same as giving fish in exchange for money.

No it is not.....come on. It's not like he's doing this on some industrial scale, nor does it sound like he has some kind of formal transaction..... X-ounces of walleye fillets buys you X-number of eggs, etc.

This is two friends doing something nice for each other.
