We are visisting relatives with 2 quarry's on their property that have catfish of good size in them and I am wondering what the best presentation would be. I used worms there years ago and caught sime fish. Are there better ways to try.

since you said quarries I would guess they are just channel cats since flatheads wouldn't do good in a pit. Just use cut up sucker minnows or chicker liver works also. depending on how deep they are you could fish them with a slip bobber set up. I have bobber fished them down in small farm ponds in Missouri and that is fun especially if you are using light equipment.

Thank you, I will try the ideas you have given me. All I remember is that they took about 10 minutes to land and they were in the 15 to 20 lb range. We will be using 6 ft medium walleye rods with 30lb braid. It should be a good time.

Actually I think Flatheads would do just fine in a quarry. Give em something to eat and they would be loving life. smile

There are a lot of resevoirs down south that hold big big fish.

Mosy quarries are pretty deep and rocky. I would think that you would have to refine things a bit to find a good proven tactic. It's tough to beat a good old bottom rig with a piece of meat on it. But don't rule out using floats with liver or prepared (stink) bait.

Sounds like a cool place. Good luck!

LOL I think I may know where you are fishing. wink If it is in Minnesota, there is only one quarry I know of that has a history of holding catfish hostage. I hear the lucky chain of lakes near by the area have been known to hold channels and even some ice fish for them. whistle

Crawler tipped with crawler. Then dowsed with a double splash of crawler. wink About 1-2' off the bottom if bobber, but tossing out and letting crawler it on bottom.

worms? seriously shack? He's after 10lb kitties...

I would try cutbait floated or tight lining on the bottom like dtro said

depending what state the lake is in...try catching something native to that lake and using it as cutbait.

I would use live for the flats and maybe a blue or two. Cut will catch everything as well.

Check with the locals down there. Found this in the regulations.

Bait Fish Exceptions

In Brewster, Crane, Crockett, Culberson, Ector, El Paso, Jeff Davis, Hudspeth, Kinney, Loving, Pecos, Presidio,

Reeves, Terrell, Upton, Val Verde, Ward, and Winkler counties, the only fishes that may be used

or possessed for bait while fishing are common carp, fathead minnows, gizzard and threadfin shad, golden

Low some of the largest channels I have bared witness to were caught on a big gob of crawler. I would say it is the most diverse starting point a person could use with any species. The worst that would happen is you could catch something native and use that for cut. grin Down that way and if it were I, I would just asking around at the local bait shop or place that sells bait and tackle.

Targeting flatheads I totally agree, but flats are caught, and big ones, by regular shore anglers down in pool 2 who are using crawlers. Just not my cup of tea for flats.

Crawlers are always ruled out of my mind when in the "get down to Da river" shuffle mode so I never really visit crawlers. I think certain times of the year and conditions warrant crawlers. I just never do but I also wonder why they do not bit on my fresh cut sometimes. grin Crawler for me has been a "go-to" bait during open water since I started fishing to see what is feeding. I assume because that is where it was at as far as baits go when I started.

Main reason why I do not use crawler more would be the non-stop factor. Non-stop as in everything feeding in the area will be picking and grabbing at a bawl of crawlers. At least up this way the sheephead isn't a factor, but more like sunnies and crappies being the replacement.

I assume someone is out tonight. Darren? Take 5-6 crawlers and make a 5/0-6/0 circle look like Medusa's head, then see what happens if the bite is slow and it is after dark (a key point because the peckers are reduced ten fold).
