ratherBfishnJP
Ok guys, first post of the year and im getting that itch to get back to my home away from home. Everyyear I try a new lure and see whats its all about and this year I want to try the soft swim bait on a jighead. Now there is a company called Big Hammer who makes some of the best softplastic swimbaits and as i look thrue the list of colors, I find myself confused as to what would work the best. I know I want to stay in the five inch body range but Im at a loss for colors to use for northerns and walleyes up there in stained water. Does anyone know about these and/or do they have other types that are great? My main issue is color selction and bighammer has a B u t t ton and i am not going to buy every color and try them. I generally fish the mississippi aroundbrainerd and most of all brainerd lakes. What colors should I go with? Thanx for your help and its nice to be back on here sharing info with you guys. kyleharty
Not familiar with those specific baits but I fish the Mississippi on Pool 4 and black/orange or chartruese, walleye, silver/blue, and firetiger or perch patterns all work well for me. Hard to go wrong with any of those IMO.
cylinder
There are a few reviews from people using them for walleyes. At least one of them mentions colors that work best for them. I picked out ones I liked and narrowed it down by comparing to the ones that were mentioned. I'm giving them a try.
RumRiverRat
I ordered some of these from Tackle Warehouse.I ordered Sexy Smelt, Black Widow, Bay Smelt, and Baitfish. For stained water I would look at Sexy Smelt, Seawolf, Glowbug, Calico Hunter and Red Calico Hunter, White Zombie and Wookie Wacker. mainbutter
I pour my own soft plastics, and most of my paddle tail swimbaits are either pure white, or gold with a white belly (sucker colors). I haven't had much of a difference in catch rates with different colors, frankly I think it doesn't matter so much if at all for northerns. ratherBfishnJP
what size would work would it be safe to say the 4 inch would work or should i go bigger?
Scott M
I got some 5 inch Big Hammers in a raffle this winter. I'm going to pair them with 1 ounce jig heads and toss them around for pike and muskies.
JPenny
No doubt the Big Hammers are one of the very best swimbaits out there. I noticed they have revamped somewhat this year. I used to use their 6" swimmers, but now they are 6 1/2". Bright colors for stained water, natural colors for clear water. The only other swimbait I will use is Lunker City's Shaker.
