Hunter instinct

How many have experienced a 6th senses or hunter instinct where you get super ready because you know something is about to happen? Bird flush, fish strike, big game arrival, set the hook or worse something bad is going to happen and it does?

There have been times while deer hunting that I could have sworn that I could smell the deer before I saw it. When that happened, it wasn't that the deer was that close either. I suppose it's still possible that I picked up some odor but it seems the animal was too far away for me to be able to do that.

I mostly hunt standing corn and push the deer out to my Son to shoot. Several times I've smelled a buck when the wind was blowing from him toward me. I circled around and when he caught my sent burst out of the corn.

I was sitting on the bank of the Mississippi last night fishing at dusk. Hood up to guard against the chill, just enjoying the sound of river. Then, no more than 10ft away, full volume honking. Mother goose and her brood of half a dozen goslings had stealthily swam up on the bank just off my back left side and realized I was there. If there was video, my guess is I leaped up well over the height of my captains chair when she let out that first honk.

I had to waddle back out of the park.

While deer hunting in a brush pile ground blind I was hunkered down low trying to stay warm and out of the wind. I heard a deer clearing it's nostrels (Like if you blow air to see if you can see your breath). As I peeked over the top of the blind and all I could see was antlers. A 10 point buck was staring at me from about 15 ft. He bolted about 50 yards and I shot him when he stopped to look back. The next year while sitting in the same blind the same thing happened. I shot that 10 pointer from about 20 feet as he walked past the blind.

I think we need some pics to go with this story!

Acouple of deer seasons ago I was sitting in the tree stand listening to the thump of a woodpecker for a good hour. All of a sudden the woodpecker stopped and flew off squaking. I thought that was kind of wierd since he seemed happy were he was at, so I got my gun ready and within 30 secs a nice 6 pointer came walking down the path. I know listen more closely to the surrounding animals that I thought were more noise makers than anything.

Not sure what I'd call it but I've had that feeling on more than one occasion while hunting upland birds and walking waterways for ducks. Usually I end up turning and looking at the exact spot the bird flushes from or quickly walk to the correct spot and a bird comes out. A strange feeling to say the least.

A few years back during deer season when all of the owls invaded MN from Canada I had one watching me for about a half hour. He kept hopping from tree to tree looking at me wondering if I was a meal. He eventually moved on and I continued to scan for deer. I suddenly got the urge to look behind my like something was there, I turned to see the large owl floating silently at my head, he was about 12 feet out and closing fast. I threw up my arms and let out some kind of shreek and the owl flared off to the right at the last 2nd and landed in a tree 20 feet away. Had I not turned and saw him coming I would probably have some talon scars in the back of my head. After the incident the darn thing just sat there and watched me for another half hour, I made sure to wave at him a few times. I even put the scope on him, I was temped to blast him for scaring the [PoorWordUsage] out of me but I kept my cool.

To this day I have a mild fear of owls while on the deer stand, I have even flinched a few times when a bird comes flying by thinking it could be another owl out to get me.

Bear55, are you sure that owl was trying to EAT you? I really don't know anything about owl mating rituals, but it did seem really interested in you. I mean REALLY interested. grin

Your description kind of reminds me of one of my parents' cats. She's always hungry, and is your best friend if she thinks there's any chance of food being involved. The desperation is kind of funny, and kind of sad all at the same time.

I was out duck hunting with a friend of mine one morning in high school. We had set up the dekes and were sitting back-to-back resting for a bit before all the action we knew was coming. All the hair on the back of my neck stood up, I slowly looked off to my right, right at an eight-point buck standing maybe 20 yards off. He was staring back at me like, "What the he|| are you doing here?" I slowly elbowed my friend on the off side from the deer, and he got an eyeful, too. That was a pretty amazing experience.

My dad saw that same buck about five minutes later, and he got the same look from the deer. I think he must've been coming home from a party or something, his sneaky-buck game was that off.

I don't know what the owl had planned for me but it made me uncomfortable to say the least. This was no mini-owl either, it was a big SOB!!!

Wow Bear55 if I would have turned my head and saw that thing flying at me there is a good chance I would have jumped right out of the stand, Man that bird is mean looking....

I would have but there wasn't enough time.

Bear55, I would have atleast peed a little in my pants.

Last year I had the experience of the 6th sense. While in my portable I just felt good about the day. After a couple of hours in the stand I just felt different.

So I decided to stand up and check my safety harness and my ability to shoot with my bow, just a second check.

I just felt I had to grab the Bow and so I did.

Wasn't 5 minutes later a nice Doe entered from behind me, made her way around me to a perfect shot oppurtunity and Score!

Could have been luck or timing, but I will go with the 6th sense.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
