The worlds foremost outfitters have some nice combos under a $100.00 The shimano sonora reel with tourney trail rod for $89.98 is a nice combo. I like the 7 foot medium power and fast action. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

That's what I started out on when I got back into fishin. Worked very well, until I shut a door on the rod (have not fixed that yet, still have to get around to that).

For the price I think it's a great setup, first fish I caught with it was a... oh yeah. A White Bear black crappie. Next one was a 5+ lb smallie, and I've handled a lot of big toothy critters on it with no problem.

Gosh, i really should get around to fixin that thing...

something in the 5.2-1 to 5.8-1 you dont need a ton of power and you dont need speed so stay in the middle. most reels are 5.2 or 5.3 to 1.

something in the 2500-3000 style for a walleye/ pike reel (bigger spool)

something in the 1500-2000 style range for a grab and go reel (avg size spool)

if its mostly a panfish reel go with a 500-1000 style reel( smaller spool)

hope this helps!

GM is running a sale right now if you buy a st croix you get a GSX reel at 1/2 price.

I would get a 6'6" st croix triumph and get the deal on the reel that should keep you right at about 100 bones.

Bought a Cabelas MagTouch Rod for $99. I like that the handle is not made from cork, but more of a rubbery type handle. Suppose to allow you to feel the blank better for sensitivity. Anyone have any experience with this rod? I believe it is a reintroduction of a rod they used to make years ago. I usually stay away from store brand rods, but could not resist to try this rod. Should be great for jigging/drop shot approaches.
