Where's the best place to get parts either in person or online? Good quality parts for a fair price are better in my opinion than super cheap parts.

I'm going to try doing a couple of things to my wife's vehicle and if it works then maybe I'll work on my own truck, if it doesn't work..... wink

I don't know what you have in mind, but look at a shop manual or a utube video before jumping in. Some things are really not worth doing yourself, like changing the starter on a 68 barracuda 340 while laying in the snow. Or anything involving exhaust systems.

Access or special tool requirements can make what you might think would be easy into an ordeal. But it can be very satisfying and save a few bucks as well. My advice is to pick your battles.

Thanks for the advice. That Barracuda is a pretty specific example..haha, personal experience?

I just want to replace her fuel filter and spark plugs for one thing, so I'm certain I can handle that.

I am also considering fixing the broken passenger side power window. That one makes me a little nervous because I'm not sure all the different things it could be...

i recently replaced a broken fan motor so now I think i know what I'm doing, but that is pretty far from the case, but it felt good!

Depending on the vehicle, I usually recommend OE for spark plugs, fuel filters, you dont want the cheapest, but I also dont buy the best either. What kind of vehicle are you thinking about working on?

I usually call the dealer, get the right part numbers if it isn't on the old part. I will then call napa or oriley and see what their prices are and then do an online search. Sometimes you get lucky and find a cheaper deal online, the next time you will find a cheaper deal online but have it come out to be the same as napa or oriley with shipping.

I recall having to purchase a new fan relay that was dealer specific part as napa or oriley didn't have and couldn't order. I ended up finding it online through some HSOforum for 80$ vs 180$. The kicker is it took almost a week and a half to get that part. Something happened with the HSOforum I purchased it off of and the contract the guy had with another HSOforum or something?

Needless to say it took longer then I wanted but in the same aspect it was nice saving almost a 100 dollars for a part that took me 10 minutes to install. Luckily it was winter and I didn't really need my fans to work so I just unplugged the relay and went about my normal driving business until the part came. Had it been summer and I needed those fans to cool I would have went and paid the 180 from the dealer!

So I guess what im saying is it depends on the vehicle, what type or part and if you want oem or aftermarket? Also, do you want it now or a week later?

Yep, personal experience. It had torsion bars and duals from the manifold back so there were two things under the starter. And the firewall over the top. Fun Fun Fun.

The only trick I would think about the power window is getting the clips off to take the inside of the door apart. Might need a special tool or something. Find out how. Remember to not start vast projects with half vast ideas.

i like rock auto's site. thanks!

the tune up is for and window is broken in my wifes '99 Windstar. I have seen a couple youtube vids for the window, doesn't seem so bad if everything goes as planned, but nothing usually does smile

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
