Froggin'

I've tried them all and I love horny toads. Perfect combination of size, weight, action, and a great hookup ratio. 4/0 or 5/0 hooks. Also a great northern lure.

I still try every new soft plasic frog I see but nothing's beat the horny toad yet for me.

Rage tails are nice too but I prefer horny toads cause they cast so nice.

And I agree spro's are a waste of $10. For that price get 2 packs of soft plastic frogs and some 5/0 hooks. I've seen a buddy get a brand new spro get bitten of by a northern on the first cast out of the package lol.

They also have horrible hookup rates on minnesota sized bass imo. Seen so many bass hit them only to have the giant frog bounce off their lips and 3 feet up into the air.

Spro frogs= bad hook set! Bought 4 of them last year and after 10-15 missed hookset with a 7th heavy fast st croix tournament bass I gave up and went to scummies.. Good frog at the discounted price but at full price I wouldn't get it again. But then again that could just be me and my bad fishing skills.

Buy the cheapest frogs you can find (BPS and Cab...s each sell acceptable products of their own that are half the price of the big boys.). Spending nine bucks to fish a frog in the slop is like wearing a designer suit to lay sod. If you're throwing frogs were you ought to, fish see only movement and a very general profile. The features that manufacturers claim exist in brand name products make no difference here. Frogging ' is brutal on baits. Reed stems, pads, and pike tear everything apart. As someone mentioned, a variety of glues can slightly extend a lure's life (I like any waterproof version of "Goop") but every frog has a short lifespan. If you truly need to obsess about something, you can swap out the bargain hooks for those made by designer shops. On the the hand, you'll need to sharpen anyone's hooks frequently, so..................

don't assume frogs are only for fishing pads/slop. froggin' over the top of grass, through rush beds, along docks etc can be very effective, and the good action does make a difference there (at least in my limited experience)

In my opinion white bottom or lighter bottom of frog body best for clearer water and black or darker colors in stained water. I agree that all those fancy colors are better at catching fisherman than fish. That being said, I fish top water prob about 30 % of the time Im fishing and I too have noticed a distinct lack of hook up ratio on my spros. I did try the trimming the legs down but I think my mossy mouse out fishes the spro 4-1. The body is way softer and thus prone to tear and snag a bit more but the bass just flat out hold it longer and seemingly deeper. The spro is harder and more durable but I don't feel it fishes as well. I too like the rage tail line and think they are very effective as as buzzbait alternative in thicker slop but the plastic isn't as durable as I'd like for the price. I highly suggest using the white and or black mossy mouse or the moss rat later in the summer towards fall as its has a larger profile. Also a med heavy to heavy baitcasting rod, strong reel with high gear ratio (7.1-1)and heavy (50lb plus) braided line like Power Pro.

i 2 do alot of froggin, using mostly stanley ribbit and rage tail soft plastic frogs. i had alot of problems with low hook up percentages even when givin the fish a few seconds 2 hold onto the bait. what i have found that has increased hookup percentages is 2 upsize my hooks. i run a 6/0 owner frog hook hooked right throuh the very back of the frog, helped me dramatically. also wonderin who makes the "horny toad" never heard of them but would like 2 give em a try

The bass on my avatar was caught on a white spro.

Q - does anyone crimp the barbs down on the frogs? I do as it's saved many o basses life since they inhale it and I give them time.

The darker colored scum frogs have worked best for me. I echo all of your guys thoughts on the spro frogs. Reading this thread really gets me pumped for opener. Couple more weeks.
